PostPosted: Mon Nov 20, 2006 10:27 pm    Post subject: Home page has been disrupted

Each time I open IE, a page, "http://theta.main-hosting.com/~mainhost/warning/2.php" comes up instead of MSN. I have installed SB S&D, Adaware Se, and Hijack this into a seperate file folder, and ran them all here is a copy of my log file. Any info is appreciated.

Please print the below instructions or copy them to Notepad.

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following if they still exist and hit 'Fix Checked' after you checked the last one:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://discussionfree.org/?Enter=Website%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20...%20%20%
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = \blank.htm
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =

Restart. Perform an online scan with Internet Explorer at Panda ActiveScan http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan.htm

* Click on 'Scan your PC' button. There should be a popup - if you have a pop-up blocker, make sure it's not blocking it.
* Click 'Check Now' & a pop-up window will appear.
* Enter your Country, State and E-mail Address & click 'Scan Now' - begin downloading Panda's ActiveX controls (8 MB size).
* Begin the scan by selecting My Computer.
* If it finds any malware, it will offer you a report. Ignore any entry it finds (since it wants you to buy the program for removal) as we will address this later.
* Click on see report. Then click Save report.
* Post that log in your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.

How is it running so far?

Go to Start->Run and type in regedit and hit OK. Go to File->Export and save the registry somewhere as a backup. Close the Registry Editor now. Go to Start->Run and type in notepad and hit OK. Then copy and paste the following into Notepad:

REGEDIT4
[-hkey_local_machine\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\uninstall\Switch]

Save the file as "delete.reg". Make sure to save it with the quotes. Close Notepad. Double click on the delete.reg file and choose Yes to merge/add it to the registry. You may delete the file afterwards.

Delete this:

c:\windows\ss3unstl.exe

Fix these in HijackThis:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [iTunesHelper] "C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe"
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [updateMgr] "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Reader\AdobeUpdateManager.exe" AcRdB7_0_7
O4 - Global Startup: Adobe Reader Speed Launch.lnk = C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Reader\reader_sl.exe

That will disable them from startup since they are not necessary to be running. That should speed things up a little.

Download AVG Anti-Spyware at http://www.ewido.net/en/download/ and install it.

Once the setup is complete you will need run AVG Anti-Spyware and update the definition files. Once that's done, exit.

Download CleanUp! http://cleanup.stevengould.org/ (Alternate Link if main link don't work - http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/CleanUp.exe ) and install it. Don't run it yet.

CleanUp! deletes EVERYTHING out of your temp/temporary folders. It does not make backups. If you have any documents or programs that are saved in any Temporary Folders, make a backup of these before running CleanUp!. Run CleanUp! and click on the CleanUp! button. Let it run. After it's done, click the Close button and choose Yes to logoff.

Make sure all windows are closed. Run AVG Anti-Spyware.
On the main screen select the 'Update' icon.
Next select the 'Start Update' button. The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
Once the update has completed select the 'Scanner' icon at the top of the screen, then select the 'Settings' tab.
Once in the Settings screen, click on 'Recommended actions' and then select 'Quarantine'.

Under Reports:
Select 'Automatically generate report after every scan'.
Un-Select 'Only if threats were found'.

Click on the Scan tab and choose to run the 'Complete System Scan' .

Restart your computer to get back to Normal Mode. Post the AVG report here when it's done along with a new HijackThis log.

How is it running now?

You may delete those cookie files...

Your log is clean.

To help prevent future spyware infections, read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial and use the tools provided.

Are there any problems now? If not, you should be set to go.
