PostPosted: Sun May 14, 2006 6:11 pm    Post subject: Help with Sims 2 Installation

I am having problems installing a geniune copy of Sims 2 onto my brand new Dell Inspiron E1705.

The installation freezes at 23% when the second disk is inserted.

From reading other posts on this board, I tried manually copying the files from each disk. However, when copying files from Disk 2, I got the message "Cannot Copy Compressed: Data Error (Cyclic Redondary Check)". I still tried to AutoRun the installation after copying the files and was not successful.

I am becoming very frustrated and would appreciate any help I could get. Thank you!

Hello JNU3 and welcome to the new Lockergnome forums!

A CRC error normally occurs when the CD/DVD is damaged.
Try performing a manual installation.

Manual installation

1 - Go into My Computer.
2 - Open drive C.
3 - Right-click inside the window and select New, and then Folder.
4 - Name the folder as Disk Images (it is important that the name has a space in it).
5 - Open the disk images folder.
6 - Right-click inside the window and select New, and then Folder.
7 - Name this folder Disk1.
8 - Repeat steps 6 and 7 while substituting Disk1 for Disk2 and so on until there are 4 'Disk' folders followed by a number 1 through 4. it is important to note there must not be a space between "Disk" and the number.
9 - Insert Disk 1 of The Sims 2 into your CD-Rom drive and if the autoplay starts, cancel it.
10 - Go into My Computer.
11 - Right-click on your CD-ROM drive and choose Open.
12 - When you see the contents of the disk in the Window, click on Edit at the top of the window and choose Select All.
13 - All the contents of the disk should now be highlighted, click on Edit at the top of the window again and choose Copy.
14 - Open the Disk1 folder you created under C:\Disk Images; click on Edit at the top of the window and choose Paste. This will copy the contents of the CD into the Disk1 folder.
15 - Repeat steps 9 through 14 for the remaining disks until you have copied each disk into its appropriate folder.
16 - Once all the disks have been copied, remove ALL CDs from any drives.
17 - Open the Disk1 folder under Disk Images and double-click on autorun.exe to start the installation.
18 - To save disk space, you can delete the Disk Images folders after the installation is complete.

If you still get the CRC message then return the game to the place of purchase and get it replaced.

After spending a few hours having a problem with "Data Transfer" during loading of the game, I found something out that many may not be aware of. ANY problems concerning a failure with "Data Transfer", be it sound or otherwise most likely will be due to a damaged disc. Take a look at the disc in question. We had to go through 3 BRAND NEW games before finally finding one that wasn't damaged (Big scratch, straight from the factory and bought at Best Buy). Unreal for something like this, but if you are unaware of it, it will drive you nuts. Maybe this will help someone. Guess it makes sense being a "transfer" issue which means it probably isn't being read right.

Hello Simsluver13,

Quote:
7. The installation freezes or you get an installation error.

First thing to try obviously is to check the CD/DVD for scratches or marks and clean.
Try renaming the InstallShield folder.

Double-click on the My Computer icon.
Double-Click on the C:
Double-Click on Program Files then on Common Files.
Right-Click on the InstallShield folder.
Select Rename.
Rename it to InstallShieldOld.
Start the installation again to reinstall the InstallShield components with the newest version.

If that doesn't work try a copying the files to your hard drive and installing from there.

FOR CD:

Go into My Computer.
Open drive C.
Right-click inside the window and select New, and then Folder.
Name the folder as Disk Images (it is important that the name has a space in it).
Open the disk images folder.
Right-click inside the window and select New, and then Folder.
Name this folder Disk1.
Repeat steps 6 and 7 while substituting Disk1 for Disk2 and so on until there are 4 'Disk' folders followed by a number 1 through 4. it is important to note there must not be a space between "Disk" and the number.
Insert Disk 1 of The Sims 2 into your CD-Rom drive and if the autoplay starts, cancel it.
Go into My Computer.
Right-click on your CD-ROM drive and choose Open.
When you see the contents of the disk in the Window, click on Edit at the top of the window and choose Select All.
All the contents of the disk should now be highlighted, click on Edit at the top of the window again and choose Copy.
Open the Disk1 folder you created under C:Disk Images; click on Edit at the top of the window and choose Paste. This will copy the contents of the CD into the Disk1 folder.
Repeat steps 9 through 14 for the remaining disks until you have copied each disk into its appropriate folder.
Once all the disks have been copied, remove ALL CDs from any drives.
Open the Disk1 folder under Disk Images and double-click on autorun.exe to start the installation.
To save disk space, you can delete the Disk Images folders after the installation is complete.

FOR DVD:

Insert the DVD into the DVD-rom drive. Exit the startup menu when it comes up.
Double click My Computer, then right click on the DVD-rom drive with the game DVD in it and select Explore.
Hold the CTRL key and then hit A. That should select all the folders and files.
Then hold CTRL and hit C. This will not look like it does much, but it's preparing to copy the files.
Close that folder and go to your desktop. Right click anywhere BUT on an icon, and Select New, then Folder. Name the folder Sims2 DVD.
Then double-click that folder, and hit CTRL and V. This will begin copying the files from the DVD.
Once the files are copied, remove the disc from the drive.
Double-click on the Setup icon in the folder.
You may delete the Sims2 DVD folder once the installation is complete.

Hi.

I got a brand new DELL Inspiron 9400 (which is named E1705 in some countries) two days ago and have exactly the same problem. The installation freezes at 23% when the second disk is inserted. I believe the problem is the copy protection this game is equipped with. It is using SafeDisc 3.2 and I think this copy protection is not compatible with all CD/DVD players. As a test I have tried to insert disc 2 in several pc-s and the only pc-s I got a problem with was DELL pc-s. The disc could not be read in the following pc-s:

Inspiron 9400
Inspiron 8600
Dimension 5150C

The only DELL pc I was able to read the cd was a very old Dell Latitude C510/C610. In my other laptop HP Compaq NW8000 it works well. The same is for HP XW 4200, HP dc 7100CMT, HP Compaq NC 8000 and a Shuttle pc. Searching at Microsoft/Sims2 web sites suggest updating to SafeDisc 4.00.060 update which can be found at Microsoft and Macrovision. The CD/DVD drive in the Inspiron 9400 is TSST TS-L532B slim 8x DVD+/-RW.

For information; the SafeDisc update helped me so I was able to read Disc 2 and copy it onto my hard disk so I could install the whole game from the hard disk. I have also experienced the same problem with CSI:Miami which is also equipped with SafeDisc 3.2.

TT

Hello miamiprincess and welcome to Lockergnome!

It sounds like the message was the drive having problems reading the disk.
Try cleaning the disk, if that doesn't work try a manual install (instructions below).

When did it display the message? When you were installing it off your hard drive? Had you removed the CD/DVD from the drive?

Perform a manual uninstall of the game.

The manual uninstall procedure includes editing the Windows registry. Incorrectly editing the windows registry can cause Windows to stop working!

1 - Go into My Computer.
2 - Go into your My Documents folder.
3 - Go into the EA Games folder.
4 - Right click on The Sims 2 folder and click Delete.
5 - Click yes when the delete confirmation window appears.
6 - Close the window when it has finished deleting.
7 - Go back into My Computer.
8 - Open drive C.
9 - Go into the Program Files folder and then into the EA Games folder.
10 - Right click on The Sims 2 folder and click Delete.
11 - Click yes when the delete confirmation window appears.
12 - Close the window when it has finished deleting.
13 - Right click on your Recycle Bin and click Empty Recycle Bin.

Now for the Windows registry part.

1 - Click on Start and then click on Run...
2 - Type in regedit and click OK.
3 - Click on the + next to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
4 - Click on the + next to SOFTWARE
5 - Click on the + next to EA GAMES
6 - Right-click on The Sims 2 folder and click Delete.
7 - Click yes when the delete confirmation window appears.
8 - Click on the + next to Electronic Arts
9 - Click on the + next to EA GAMES
10 - Right-click on The Sims 2 and choose Delete.
11 - Click yes when the delete confirmation window appears.
12 - Click on the + next to Microsoft.
13 - Click on the + next to Windows.
14 - Click on the + next to Current Version.
15 - Click on the + next to Uninstall.
16 - If you have the CD edition, right-click on the the Key named {8AB8D458-939E-403F-0097-9BA1C1F013D5} and click Delete; if you have the DVD edition, right-click on the Key named {40C03514-89C3-41BA-0090-3B440256DB87} and click Delete; If you have the UK/European CD edition right-click on the Key named {6E7DD182-9FC6-4651-0095-2E666CC6AF35} and click Delete.
17 - Click yes when the delete confirmation window appears.

Now try a manual install again.

Is your computer a Dell? If so what model is it?

Hi, I've been having the same installation problems, with my installation usually freezing after I install the second or third disc. I'm attempting to do the manual installation but I'm unsure what to do when it asks to insert disc two. Obviously, the same message keeps popping up when I click 'OK.' Does anyone know what to do at this point?

I've tried the manual uninstall and then I was doing the manual install. While the manual installation is in progress, should it be asking for disc 2? And if so, what should I do?

I'm asking this because I was doing the manual installation and it asked for disc 2 - then I wasn't sure what to do.

I'd also like to note that there has never been an EA Games or anything of the sort folder in my My Documents. Is this a problem?

And thanks for the welcome Smile

EDIT: Sorry, I was looking in the wrong My Documents. I found it in shared documents.
