"Rude and Disrespectful"
| Quote: |
Most Americans say the tone of the debate has been negative. According to the latest weekly News Interest Index survey, conducted September 11-14 among 1,003 adults by the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press, 53% say the tone of the debate over health care has been generally rude and disrespectful; 31% say it has been generally polite and respectful and 16% do not offer an opinion.
Among those who say the debate has been rude and disrespectful, most believe that opponents of the health care legislation under consideration are to blame. By a 59% to 17% margin, more blame opponents than supporters of the legislation; 17% volunteer that both groups are to blame.
There is disagreement between partisan groups when it comes to the tone of the debate, and – among those who say it has been rude – over who bears the blame for the negative tone. While a clear majority (65%) of Democrats say the debate has been rude and disrespectful, Republicans are more divided: 44% say it has been polite and respectful, while 40% say it has been rude and disrespectful.
By a 53% to 31% margin, independents say the debate has been more rude than polite.
Among Democrats who see the debate as rude, 85% say that opponents of health care legislation are to blame for the tone. By contrast, 18% of Republicans put the blame on opponents, while many more (45%) say supporters are to blame. Another 27% say both supporters and opponents are to blame.
Among independents, 49% blame opponents, 20% blame supporters of the legislation and 24% blame both. |
Has politics ever been polite ?

Attempting to stop dialogue is unacceptable. It doesn't matter which political party or person uses those child-like tactics to do so. That is not what democracy is about. William F Buckley purposefully weeded those type of hooligans and fascists out of the Republican Party.
Today he would be confronting and denouncing the media whores of the far right, like Rush Limbaugh, and then turn to engage his opponents in meaningful dialog. I may not have liked some of Buckley's' views but they were presented in a succinct, knowledgeable, and quiet manner. His points were always well made and I always felt he had some credence when watching him debate another pundit or politician.
It is one thing to demonstrate noisily outside but when inside, where the dialog must occur, adults must conduct themselves in a civil manner and with decorum.
Someone in the Republican leadership needs to take a stand, show some gonads, and start to denounce the right-wing and left-wing zealots who only bang the drum loudly in an attempt to drown out democracy.

Why does someone in the Republican leadership need to take a stand. What about the Democratic leadership? Are they going to denounce Chris Mathews? Do you honestly think it would make any difference if the leadership of either party denounced them?
I've heard this argument before. It's been used frequently before by the liberal left to criticize and attempt to stifle the arguments of the conservative right. And based on your comments Mikhail I'm guessing you probably lean toward the left politically. I've listened to Limbaugh enough to know that while, yes, he can be over the top at times almost all of what he says is pretty truthful and accurate. It has to be because the political left would jump on any little mistake he makes. What I would like to know is why all the condemnation of right wing talk show hosts like Limbaugh and Beck but whenever asked why nobody can ever point to anything specific from those guys and show where what they are saying is wrong or inaccurate. It's always that they just don't like the tone or tenor of the message and want those guys to shut up. What can I say, the truth hurts sometimes. Don't like the message....don't tune in and listen!
As for me I much prefer to take more note of the message and whether it is truthful than pay a lot of attention to the messenger. Having said that I find a whole lot more truth in the message coming from the "right" and folks like Limbaugh and Beck than I do in the message coming from the "left". So the way I see it is if the message is truthful and banging the drum loudly is the only way to rise above the din of misinformation out there than let me fetch you the biggest darn drum I can find. Limbaugh and Beck make for a pair of mighty big drums don't they? Or is it that you have something against hearing the truth? |

| Touche' CowpokeBob. The reason for the SEEMINGLY boisterous and 'rude' comments from the right is that they need to shout to be heard over the racous left. Not too mention that people are angry over what is happening and are naturally concerned that this administration is trying to ram this heathcare bill down their throats, just as they did with the ridiculous (and some might say, criminal) stimulus bill. If someone is in your house robbing you blind, you don't speak in soft tones and whispers, no, you scream bloddy murder! |

Ummmm, close but no...I'm from the South and we call it self defense, LOL.
We just call the coroner and tell him to come pick 'em up so they'll quit leaking on the carpet.
You know the truly sad thing is that both sides are yelling about wanting to get the same thing done. They just have differing views on the best way to do it and neither side is really listening to the American public. Instead of doing a little old fashioned wheeling and dealing to come up with a compromise we could all live with they'd rather scream, yell, call each other names and generally act like children. Extremely spolied children. I say we throw them all out on their collective fannies and pick a new bunch to take their place. We could snatch folks off the street and not do any worse. Take some poster size shots of the old bunch to hang on a "Wall of Shame" so the new bunch don't forget how they got there too soon. To that end I'll continue a process in 2010 I've done for several elections now. I don't vote for incumbents. One term is all you get my vote for. Except for George W. The Libs hated him with a passion and more importantly it kept Kerry out of the Oval Office so I just had to do it. Otherwise we may have had to face this mess several years sooner. |
