Hi all, Very Happy
I am hoping someone can help me with this. Rolling Eyes
First, what I was trying to do, was setup the computer so that my son could play games without having the CD in the drive. (Damaged disks... get it) Wink

What was suggested to me (elsewhere in Lockergnome) was to install
Alcohol 120% and create a virtual drive and install the game there.
Well, that didn't work. Confused
So, I uninstalled Alcohol 120%.
Now comes the problem. Rolling Eyes
When I start the computer I get 2 error message boxes that pop up.
(wish I could put screenshots of them here for you to see)

The 1st one is this:
HARDWARE INSTALLATION
The software you are installing for this hardware:
Extended IO Bus

has not passed Windows Logo testing to verify its compatibility with WindowsXP

Continue Anyway STOP Installation

I click: stop installation

The 2nd is this:
FOUND NEW HARDWARE WIZARD
Cannot install this Hardware
There was a problem installing this hardware:
System
An error occurred during the installation of the device.

The driver cannot be installed because it is either not
digitally signed or not signed in the appropriate manner.
Contact your hardware vendor.

Click finish to close the wizard.

Finish

Also on the right side of the taskbar, I get 3 popup balloons:

Found New Hardware:
Extended IO Bus

Found New Hardware:
System

A problem occurred:
Installed device may not work correctly

I hope this information will help you help me. Embarassed Wink
I just want to know how to stop these messages. Cool

My system info is:
WindowsXP Pro SP2
AMD Athlon XP 1700+
1.46 GHz
768mb ram

Thanks everyone, Smile

I've had similar problems and experiences trying to use Alcohol.
I thought it had something to do with me using the limited and free trial version rather than the 120% version.

What I have discovered is that it is a very "persistant" piece of software which leaves muddy footprints all over the place even after an apparent uninstall. ( In my humble opinion it's harder to get rid of than Norton!!)

What I've done is :

Download Revounistaller : http://www.revouninstaller.com/index.html
Re-install Alcohol
then uninstall Alcohol using Revouninstall ( using the highest setting).

This won't solve your problem about getting virtual drive versions of your valuable CDs....but it will get rid of the most annoying residues of Alcohol.

If you or anybody knows or finds how to reliably create virtual drive versions of cd software ( all legal bought and paid for and for single machine use), let me know.

Hello Louis-the-Cat

Thank you very much for the info. Smile
Unfortunately, it didn't work. Crying or Very sad
I had a feeling that it wouldn't because Alcohol 120 DOSEN'T show up in Windows add/remove programs in the control panel, and it didn't in RevoUninstaller either.
I had to uninstall it from the program listing and then delete the folder in windows explorer.
But, I did get rid of the problem tho.
When I first got the problem, with other things I tried, I did a system restore on the computer. I went back about a week. It didn't help.
Well today after your suggestion didn't help, I figured I give system restore another try. I went back 6 weeks this time. AND IT WORKED! Very Happy Very Happy Rolling Eyes
But I do want to thank you for RevoUninstall, it does seem to be a very good program and I will put in in my computer bag-of-tricks. Cool Wink
Thank you once again,
Bucky
P.S. If I do figure out that virtual drive thing... I will be sure to let you know. Wink Smile

yeah, thought there might be problems....especially with the bits that the control panel uninstaller hadn't removed........that's why I suggested you do a new INSTALL of the programme before doing an uninstall with Revo'.

Looks like a system restore did the same . I'll remember that trick, ta!

Another thing, You can .... use a "burning" software to "backup" the game CD/DVDs.

Make a copy of that "backup", for your son to use.
If It gets unusable again, burn another copy.

VSO has one........... look it up.

I'm a sucker for FREE software. I tried a FREE copy of both Alcohol and Ashampoo. I've since then deleted both.

But I have this ghost drive, CD drive M:, that showed up on my PC. I can't remove it, I can't open it of course because there's no disk in it, etc. It only shows up in Windows, not in the bios, since it really doesn't exist. I've even searched the registry for M: and find nothing. Big mystery.

It had mysteriously disappeared from my PC and I was glad to see it gone, then the "Defraggler" messed up my HD and I had to revert back to a Ghost Image and behold, the ghost drive M: is back again.
Cheeeeech! Some days I can't win for loosing.

Yes, NEVER use original CD's to play games.
ALWAYS use copies.

Cheers Mates!

Hi pcrattail Smile
Hi drwho07 Smile

Yep, that's what I'm going to do. Wink
I'm making backups of all his "good" games.
But there are a couple that won't work as a copied disk. Confused
I figured there would be, (Roller Coaster Tycoon is one of them).
I know there are ways around that, but I have to find out about doing it. Laughing
But like drwho said, I also love to try new programs also. Cool
Most of the time I don't really have any problems with them, but Alcohol was a real pain in the a**. I hope it sleeps well in the recycling bin. Laughing Laughing
Thanks all,
Bucky

OK..... Since THIS is for LEGAL copies...
There ARE places on the NET that have things called "NODISK" Versions of GAMES.
Basically, it puts everything on the Hard Drive, and then "points" the rest of the game to spot.
OR...... You can try the VSO software to "backup" that CD.

Well, let me first say that I don't play games that come on CD's.

But, I will say that I only use NERO 8 for my CD and DVD burning software.
I have successfully made copies of several retail 'movies' with NO problem at all. If you're not using Nero, give it a try.
I'm currently running Nero 8, Micro. It only takes up about 23 megs on the HD.

Don't have it...want it but can't afford the $100 for it? PM me.

Hi drwho,

I had Nero 5 a few years ago (still have it somewhere) and didn't care for it.
I have been using Roxio Easy CD & DVD Creator 6 now for about 2 years and like it a lot.
Are there many changes between Nero 5 & 8? Question

I Used Roxio in the beginning.... sorry to say... IT SUCKED.
I started using NERO, and never, ever, ever looked back.
My Buring Prowles consists of these.

NERO 6 Ultra Edition = for normal burning and mp3 conversions.
MyDVD 9 Studio Premier = for creating DVDs from Scratch.
VSO (all their software) = for DVD / (hard to copy) Games copying progam (not really "legal" for USA use).
DVD Shrink = for "backing up" DVDs onto your Hard Drive.

...... They have NEVER let me down in my 3 years of usage ......

I have to side with bucky. I used Adaptec (pre-Roxio) and it works great. Nero has always created problems.
I suspect that some computers , and maybe it is the optical drive involved, just work better with one burning program.

I use ImgBurn (free) for ISOs and it has NEVER FAILED! I finally learned how to use it to burn data CDs.
