| I've just put a new Seagate Barracuda 80gb in my PC. Everything works OK but I'm a bit concerned about the temperature of the HD. It's almost too hot to touch, even with the PC side cover off. Whether I've just noticed this because I'm fiddling around with cloning or whether this temp is normal I'm not sure. Do HD's get pretty hot anyway?
The rest of the PC is running at normal temperature. I'd be grateful for any comments.

|
Anything between 5 and 50 degrees C is normal for hard drives.

Hello,
Modern hard disk drives can get hot, especially the 7,200RPM and faster varieties.
You may wish to consider re-mounting the hard disk drive so one of your case fans blows across it or if a case fan isn't present in the general location, adding one.
Alternatively, you could re-mount the hard disk drive in a fan bay such as this or this to have a constant flow of air across it.
Adding additional case fans or fan bays to a system will increase its noise level, though.
Regards,

Thank you for that. I've found similar products here in the U.K. Didn't know such things existed so I will order tomorrow. |

| If you don't mind losing a 5.25 bay I'd highly recommend getting a removable drive bay. Most of them come with fans (so you'll get the drive cooling facet of the fan and the aluminum casing) and if your heading somewhere and dont want to leave you drive behind or your house is burning down and you want to save your mp3...just pull it straight out. I have two of the Vantec models but Lian Li also makes some nice ones. |

| Some cases come with hard drive fan mounting holes/brackets. |

| I have a hard drive cooler on all my hard drives. The ones that i like the most are the ones that mount under the hard drive. One that mounts in a 5.25 bay can't handle a very big fan. |

Those coolers are nice if you have a good inflow of air into the case but otherwise your just blowing hot air onto a hot drive...not effective cooling. The ones with front mounted 40mm fans (whether one, two or three) are more effective in that respects but can mess up your cooling layout by blowing (depending upon location) hot air onto the CPU fan. I prefer the latter type of setup (sucking air from outside the case) because most people have pretty bad inflow setups in their systems |

Try the lower bays in the drive cage. In my case I have 2 fans drawing air in from the front of the case, and the 2 harddrives are behind them. They still get hot. but I can touch them without leaving skin behind...
