Things aren't looking rosy for Dell:

HP knocks Dell off PC pedestal without trying | Channel Register

HP has snatched the PC crown from Dell's barely coherent clutches. It has taken HP close to three years to once again lead the market in worldwide PC sales. Under CEO Carly Fiorina and post Compaq, the company largely gave up on the tit-for-tat struggle with Dell for the PC top spot that had been so important to it over the years. Now it has reclaimed the #1 slot during the third quarter on the back of Dell's self-destruction.

Overall, worldwide PC shipments hit 59.1m units in the third quarter – a 7 per cent rise from the same period last year, according to new data from Gartner. The US PC market, however, dipped 2 per cent, marking its first fall since mid-2002. Dell is particularly exposed to the US PC market, and it showed.

Dell shipped 9.5m PCs worldwide during the quarter to grab 16.1 per cent of the market. HP, however, managed to ship 9.7m PCs to take 16.3 per cent of the market. HP enjoyed 15.4 per cent sales growth, while Dell posted just 3.6 per cent growth.

The other top PC makers – Lenovo, Acer and Toshiba – all reported double digit sales growth and increased their market share, Gartner said.

Dell was obliterated in the US market with sales sliding 7.1 per cent. It's still the dominant player in the US with 32 per cent market share versus HP's 23 per cent share. HP saw sales rise 6.3 per cent in the US. (continued)

Even with all the problems with the HP/Compaq line, they are still years ahead of Dell in building quality computers.

Since Dell farmed out their tech. support, consumers are really noticing the difference. It is hard enough trying to fix a PC problem, without having a language issue to contend with.

I had a neighbor who called Dell since I had confirmed his hard disk had gone out. After a hour on the phone just trying to understand the tech., they concluded from the Dell diagnostic that nothing was wrong. I told him, hang up, and we will call back.

I unplugged the PC from the wall. Called back and after another hr. on the phone they concluded since the system wouldn't start that the system needed a new mobo and cpu. Sure enough a hired tech showed up and replaced the mobo & cpu. Of course the system wouldn't start and he concluded the hard disk was out. No Duh !

So he replaced that as well. You wonder why Dell isn't doing so well lately. Cool

HP/Compaq makes some pretty solid hardware. It's just the quantity of Trials, Demo's, Games and spyware that they put on new PC's that get's my goat.

It takes me about three hours to set up a new HP or Compaq.

I can't just write a batch file to dump the junk, as much of it is installed INTO windows and must be DE-Installed via 'Add/Remove' programs.

Even after that, a physical examination of the HD is required to remove folders left behind by the Removal process. Then a good cleaning of the registry is needed to get rid of left over Registry Keys.
I've reduced the size of the Registry by as much as 25% by doing a really good cleaning. Then I run "NTREGOPT.exe" to re-compress the registry.

Dell is just as bad in the "Crapola Software" department, but their hardware is junk.

Buyer beware!
