Hi - I was wondering if anyone has tried to refill cartridges #56 or #57 for the HP Deskjet 5650. I've refilled them, and what do you know? the ink levels are not restored. I've tried all the tricks with covering the various contacts. I can't get the computer to print out an alignment page, it just tells me there is something wrong with my black ink cartirdge and thats it. It never prints, the alignment job just sits in the printer queue. Is the 5650 "too smart" for these tricks? Has anyone else figured out to over come this? Or what could i posisbly be doing wrong? THANKS!!

<Full disclosure> I manage a Cartridge World store</Full Disclosure>
These can be refilled and recycled, but not with those little kits you can buy in a store. Those kits use a generic ink that most printers won't be able to make a good print with.

We fill these cartridges under a vacuum, using inks that match as closely as possible the original formula (without violating patents). When you refill them, you cannot allow air to get into the sponge inside. If you get an air bubble behind the print head, it can block that part of the head.

You also need to be sure not to touch (too much) the electronics on the end of the cartridge. Wipe them off with alcohol if you have. If ink or fingerprint oil gets on those contacts, your printer may not recognize the cartridge. Clean both the cartridge electronics and the contacts in the printer.

In your case I'd say either the electronics are bad or the printer's memory recognizes that cartridge (via the electronics) and won't consider it anything but empty.

Printers have no way to determine what kind of ink is in a cartridge. They also have no direct way to measure ink level (no float or dipstick). They rely on average page counts to estimate ink usage. Weight is the only accurate method of determining ink level, and printers don't contain scales.

I read this thread and almost decided to skip it.
Then my rotten nature took over and I said, "Aw what the heck, give it a whack!"

I'm an Epson factory trained printer tech. (past tense)
The modern Epson ink carts cannot be refilled because of the way the carts are made. However, my ink supplier has clear carts made for him in China that are a real snap to refill with a hypodermic needle.

The clinker is the little page counter chip on the back of the cart. You must have a chip resetter to reset this chip or the cart still looks empty to the printer. I have the whole works and regularly reset and refill my own ink carts for my four Epson printers.

Jeber, do the HP carts now have the page counter chip on them? I was told that some do. Do you know of a chip resetter for personal use?

The constant flow ink supply kits have a set of carts with chips that reset themselves every time the printer is turned on. (Epson)

Just curious about the HP carts.

Happy Computing,

I found this for the HP5550
Certain newer Hewlett-Packard models will indicate a low ink condition through an on-screen display even after refilling. To reset the ink monitor to display “Full”, follow this procedure.
1. Open printer lid so cartridges move to center of carriage.
2. Lift clamp and remove black or color cartridge from the holder.
3. Place cartridge on table with copper contact strip facing you.
4. Carefully place a strip of clear plastic tape over the four contacts on the upper left corner of the cartridge.
5. Reinstall cartridge in printer and close lid. Wait until cartridge returns to parking position.
6. Open lid and remove cartridge again. Remove tape from left side and place tape over four contacts at upper right corner of cartridge.
7. Reinstall cartridge in printer and close lid. Wait until cartridge returns to parking position again.
8. Open lid again, remove cartridge, remove tape.
9. Reinstall cartridge and close lid.
Printer will now recalibrate. Once the process is complete the ink level meter should be reading full again.

Hello,

SSC Localization Group (home page in Russian) publishes a program named SSC Service Utility for Epson Stylus Printers which claims to perform a variety of ink management functions. There is also a discussion here in the FixYourOwnPrinter.Com forums of resetting Epson printers.

Mr. Ink Jet provides this page on their web site explaining how to reset the ink level reported by a variety of Hewlett-Packard ink jet printer cartridges

I typically use laserjet printers so am not personally familiar with any of the steps or tools outlined above.

At one time i filled all my printers.

I have a HP1000 Photosmart i use to fill, now i'm using factory filled no mess , it's all most cheaper than me filling them.

The Epson R200 i've never filled.

Brat,
If you have an Epson R200 less than one year old, you can get a new one by just calling Epson and ragging on them about your CD drawer not working properly. I just got one for my own R200. I also got a R340 for my R320 that was having the same problem with the CD drawer not working properly.

For Epson ink, check out:
www.inkproducts.com

These are the people I get all my Epson ink from and have for several years.

Y'all have a great day now, Y'hear?
