PostPosted: Sat Nov 14, 2009 5:53 pm    Post subject: HJT - Slow Vista Computer. Need help!

I've been having trouble with my computer for about a week now. It's very slow and has a slow response time. I noticed this problem after one of three things I've recently done to upgrade my computer. 1) Upgraded Kaspersky Internet Security 2009 to 2010. 2) Uninstalled Java JRE 6 update 16 to install update 17. 3) Used a program called 'JavaRa' to delete useless java files after uninstalling update 16 to upgrade to update 17. I've followed all the steps on the KRC Anti-Spyware Tutorial page except the 'optional' stuff. Here are all the logs from those necessary steps. Thanks in advance for any help!

I don't see anything suspicious here except for one entry which seems to be just a reference at this point. We can try disabling some startup programs to see if it helps:

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following if they still exist and hit 'Fix Checked' after you checked the last one:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Adobe Reader Speed Launcher] "C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Reader 8.0\Reader\Reader_sl.exe"
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WinampAgent] "C:\Program Files (x86)\Winamp\winampa.exe"

O4 - Global Startup: Logitech SetPoint.lnk = ?

Check and fix all the below O18 entries related to Logitech except for the first one (see below). Leave that one alone.

I suggest removing AVG Anti-Spyware since you have an outdated version, plus Kaspersky should be able to handle it. You have SUPERAntiSpyware and Ad-Aware Ad-Watch running at startup as well. I suggest keeping only one real-time spyware scanner. Since you have Kaspersky Internet Security, I think it comes with one already. If that's the case, you can disable the other two from running at startup. This should also save some resources when you startup your computer and login.

Restart the computer and see if there is any improvement.

Ok, I'll give it a shot. I'm not sure why AVG Anti-Spyware was showing up. I uninstalled that a long time ago because Kaspersky will not install if you have AVG already on your computer. As for SUPERAntiSpyware, I'll uninstall it. I just installed and ran it because it was part of the KRC Anti-Spyware Tutorial.

I do have a couple questions for you. I didn't see 'CCleaner' mentioned anywhere on the KRC tutorial or the Spyware Warrior page. Is it a good/safe program to use? Also, does ZonedOut and the HOSTS file work with Firefox or do they only work with IE? I was just curious. I've always used both with IE, but just recently started using Firefox. Mainly because IE's response time is REALLY long since my computer has slowed down. Yet Firefox's response isn't so bad. Anyway, last question pertaining to this --

Things to do before running HijackThis:

* Close any applications you have running currently. These include any programs running in your system tray near the clock (unless they are virus and firewall protection programs).
* Go to Start->(Settings)->Control Panel->Folder Options->View and select Show hidden files and folders. Next uncheck Hide file extensions for known file types. Also make sure that Display the contents of System Folders is checked (if this option is available).

Should I keep those folder options changed before I do the next HijackThis scan? Also, do I leave them like that or change them back to default after the scan? Thanks a lot for all the help!

Update

I did everything you said to do. I restarted a few times and still no improvement. Here is the updated HJT log:

Yes, CCleaner is safe to use. It comes with a temp file/folder cleaner and registry cleaner as well. I usually recommend using ATF Cleaner for removing temp files and EasyCleaner to clean out the registry.

Yes, ZonedOut and the customized HOSTS file (by MVPS) will definitely help out with IE as well as Firefox. The entries in the HOSTS file will be universal for your computer. So no matter what browser you are using, it will prevent you from visiting those suspicious sites listed in that file.

It doesn't matter if you change the folder options back. I just need you to do it in case some of the files you need access to (rename or delete) are hidden. You may change it back if you like or leave it as is. If you have users who like to poke around the system folders, then I suggest changing it back so you hide those system files.

Did you remove SUPERAntiSpyware before or after running that new HijackThis scan? I still see it showing up there. We'll fix that along with other startup programs that should be ok to remove.

Uninstall the following via the Add/Remove Panel (Start->Settings->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs) if found:

Viewpoint

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following if they still exist and hit 'Fix Checked' after you checked the last one:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Ad-Watch] "C:\Program Files (x86)\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware\AAWTray.exe"
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (reboot)] "C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbam.exe" /runcleanupscript
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [!AVG Anti-Spyware] "C:\Program Files (x86)\Grisoft\AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5\avgas.exe" /minimized
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [SUPERAntiSpyware] C:\Program Files (x86)\SUPERAntiSpyware\SUPERAntiSpyware.exe

O18 - Filter hijack: text/html - {0EB00690-8FA1-11D3-96C7-829E3EA50C29} - (no file)

If that still doesn't speed things up, you might want to try removing Kaspersky to see if there is any improvement. You can get the free version of AVG Antivirus & Anti-Spyware at:

I uninstalled SUPERAntiSpyware before I ran that last HJT scan. I went to uninstall Viewpoint and I don't see it. I see Viewpoint Media Player. Is that the same thing? I ran a new HJT scan and removed everything you said to. This object is still showing up:

Yes, uninstall Viewpoint Media Player also.

Still very slow?

Go to http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix and follow the instructions on how to install the Recovery Console and run ComboFix. Go through all the steps until posting the log part. Post the combofix log here.

Still very slow?

Go to http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix and follow the instructions on how to install the Recovery Console and run ComboFix. Go through all the steps until posting the log part. Post the combofix log here.

Ok, Viewpoint Media Player is uninstalled. Yeah, still very slow with response times. I'll download and run ComboFix. I probably won't be able to do it tonight. I should have time tomorrow and once it's done I'll post up the log. I'll keep you updated.

After disabling Ad-Aware, SpywareGuard, SpywareBlaster, and Kaspersky I went to run ComboFix and it would not run. An error came up that said my OS was incompatible. It said compatible OS's are 2000 and XP in 32 bit. Should ComboFix still be able to run even though I'm running 64 bit Vista?

Status Update

After messing with it the past two days I decided to do the thing that was basically 'last resort'. I didn't want to have to but I uninstalled Kaspersky Internet Security 2010 and all of a sudden (literally instantly) my computer was running fine. I decided to downgrade back to KIS 2009 and everything seems fine now. I'm not sure exactly what the problem was. I'm going to do some reseach on their forums to see what I can come up with. Anyway, thank you for all the help. It's much appreciated!

Make sure you KIS 2009 still provides all the latest updates. One of the main reasons I don't recommend using security suites is because of the very same problem you experienced. They seem to bog down a machine.

Glad the issue is resolved. Locking topic...
