It's driving me crazy......
My cpu seems to be beeping, randomly, for no reason I can tell. It's a solid continuous tone that penitrates my brain and makes me want to leave the room after 5 seconds. It is not consistant. Sometimes it happes during a program, sometimes not. Sometimes during bootup, sometimes not. I can run the same programs over and over fine, then all of a sudden it beeps at me insesently. Even with my speakers physically unplugged and disconnected it happens.
This never happened before. I have recently reformatted my computer and only since then has this started happening. I have installed every update and patch I had before. I even flashed the motherboard BIOS to the latest version with no effect.
I am just totally confused and annoyed.
Can I turn off the pc speaker? I remember way back when that computers had a speaker on the m/b.....do they still have them? What else could be making this noise? And where do I even start to look to fix it??????
I hate high pitch tones and I can't afford to take my computer in to a repair shop or get a new one....... Anyone, please help......... |

Oh, my motherboard is: Foxconn NF4UK8AA-8EKRS
Running XP Pro, AOpen Aeolus 6800GT DVD256MB PCI-E graphics card, AMD 3800+, 2 gig RAM
And like I said, everything worked beautifully before the reformat/reinstall |

Give us the beep pattern. Ex: 3 short beeps, 1 long beep...etc. That will help us determine the issue. Also tell us the BIOS manufacturer there...usually you will see this once it boots up or go into the BIOS itself to find out.
It could be the processor or RAM but we can't be sure until you give us the beep codes. |

No pattern, just a long beep. And so far it's been doing it during bootup everytime (5 reboots in a row so far).
Whe I was building this machine a while back the original m/b beeped at me after I fried it, this is not the same kind of beeping as that. Just a solid "eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee", just high pitch enough to invoke fingernails on chaulkboard response in me.
WinFast is the BIOS. Here is the Foxconn site for the m/b: http://www.foxconnchannel.com/en-us/Product/motherboard_detail.aspx?ID...-gb0000 |

Can't find much on the Winfast BIOS there, but generally speaking, that long beep can mean three things:
1. Power Supply
2. System Board (motherboard)
3. Keyboard
Do you have any of those spare parts? Your best bet is probably the keyboard first and then power supply (see if you can find another compatible power supply from another computer to test out). Hopefully it won't come down to the system board. But if you tested it with another keyboard and power supply and still get the beep, it might be the motherboard. |

My entire system is less than 6 months old, including keyboard. I only have an extra keyboard and that didn't change anything.
Latest results: It hasn't beeped at all (boot up and game).... until I installed D&D Online. It continuously emits the tone the entire time the game is running.
I don't have the means or opportunity to get a new power supply or m/b right now. Any other possibilities to try?? |

Hello,
I wonder if the CPU might be overheating.
Is there any software available from the motherboard manufacturer to monitor the CPU's temperature? If so, does it appear to operate within a normal range when you are using the computer?
Regards,

never thought of overheating.....I'll look into that
added on:
There is a monitoring utility on the m/b CD that I installed. Left it running during the game and switched back to it (Alt-Tab) to see temps.
Base temps started at: 32 C for the CPU and 41 C for the system temp
every so often I would switch when the tone grew intollerable and checked temps (tone went away when switching away from game).
Max CPU temp was 39c and max system temp was 44c |

Let us know what you find out. This may also helps others in the forum who may encounter a similar situation in the future.
FWIW - my first thoughts were a stuck/sticky key on the keyboard. |

Had this same problem about 5 years ago. Turned out to be malware. Never did any damage to system or leaked any info through firewalls. Just annoyed the h**l outa me.
I disconnected the wire leads from the motherboard to the system speaker...yes they still have them.
When I decided to reformat the hard drive....the little bugger went away. |

Have you opened up the case and listened to see exactly where the sound is coming from?
It may be a beep and it may be the sound of a fan bearing failing.
Then if you properly determin that it's coming from the motherboard speaker, start unplugging various things from the mobo to see if you can eliminate the beep. I've heard that sound coming from a mobo speaker when the ram was missing or not plugged in tight.
Unplug the ram, clean the edge connector and reinstall it. Same with any plug in cards that you may have.
Good Luck,

Well, I have unplugged and replugged everything in on the m/b.
I can't bring myself to do it while running though, I can't convince myself that it would be ok and the main fans kinda hurt when you get too close.
But all on the m/b is secure. I can't locate where the sound is comming from exactly. It doesn't sound anything like bearings though. The only things that move during the game are the same things that move during normal operation.
What program did you use to wipe out the Malware? I used Ewido, Spybot and AdAware SE with only minimum results.
Any other ideas? It seems we are running low on options at this point....
I double checked the m/b manual, saw a connector labeled speaker and unplugged it.....didn't do anything |

I wouldn't plug things in or out when the system is running. I believe what Shawdow meant was to reseat everything with the system off. |

OK, I installed Dragonshard and Guild Wars.
Dragonshard gives the same beep, maybe it's something with Atari software?
Guild Wars had no problem at all. No issues at all. Until I quit out of the game. Then the screen went black. I had to reboot to be able to do anything. Now what is that all about?? |

Allo Joram
You say you unplugged the speaker connection, did you check that the 2 wires actually go to the PC case speaker??? If the cable DOES go there, then the beeeeeeep is something else....
The only other components capable of making a similar noise would be the CD drives, hard disks and fans...
With the PC running and the case open, try resting a fingertip on the drives, one at a time, to see if you 'feel' the vibration in a drive... Also, the same test with any/all fans, a fingertip on the centre hub of a spinning fan should change the pitch of the beeeeeeep. If the pitch changes, that's the faulty bit.... |

I think the your "System" temp is a bit high, it should be lower than the CPU temp.
You also stated that your screen went blank on exiting a game....
Have you tried another display card, or updating the display driver, or checking the temp on the display card???
If you unplugged the onboard speaker, did you also unplug the audio out jack from the mob???
Sometimes a ground loop will cause the same type of squealling noise.
If all audio is disconnected, then it has to be a fan, or hd/cdrom drive that is going out..

If it is a steady sound comming from your speakers, then a file is missing from your sound card driver. Reinstall the sound card driver. Also If I remember correctly, you said you built your computer? Did you put the special grease between the CPU and the Heat Sink? Make sure that the heat sink is seated properly.

I haven't been able to do anything with my computer in a while cause I've been busy lately.....but when I get back to it, I'll update my progress.
And all due respect Larry, if you had read the post, you would have seen that I have stated more than once that the sound has nothing to do with the speakers or sound card. And my processor would have had a melt down by now if I hadn't put the goo on it....
......not trying to be a complete @ss, but c'mon, don't post if aren't going to read it all |
