|

Google results are redirected to random sites:
addresses.com, mooter.com, loans-inc.com, ohiopowertool.com, bridge2.admarketplace.net, ave99.com, filmannex.com, etc.
More go thru Mooter.com than the others i noticed.
AVG updated and scans clean, as does Avast, Panda, Kapersky, and Prevx..
AdawareAE, Spybot, Malwarebytes, run but disappear before finishing.
SuperAntiSpyware runs but is clean.
HiJackThis (renamed) runs but before it finishes it blips/disappears from screen leaving no log. Then HJT program won't even run again if i open it.
This happens in Safe Mode or regular mode (XP sp2).
I can't get automatic update of Windows to work, it gives an error message, so i can't upgrade to sp3.
Very frustrating, any help appreciated!!!

| Hi John, welcome to Lockergnome.
Sorry for the very late reply. If you still need assistance, please do the following:
Go to http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix and follow the instructions on how to install the Recovery Console and run ComboFix. Go through all the steps until posting the log part. Post the combofix log here. If possible, rename ComboFix first even before you save it to your computer. Rename it to something like CFJBoyd333.exe instead and then save it to your desktop and run it.

Thanks very much for your response, I am sad / happy to say that I got a new 500g drive, copied all the data off the old infected drive, and reinstalled win xp on the new drive. Now I'm free, but I don't know the name of the infection I had, nor how to remove it in the future. It was such a nasty thing, too!
I appreciate your instructions, and will post again in the future if I run into similar problems. So far so good, running the commercial version of AVG 8.
take care,
john |

I'm glad to hear that the problem is resolved now John...
Hopefully you won't need to post back here soon at least not for spyware or virus related issues
To help prevent future spyware infections, read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial and use the tools provided.
Topic will be locked since issue is resolved. |
