| I had a motherboard failure, and had to buy a new computer. One of my most used programs is Google Earth.
I installed Google Earth on the new machine, but, of course, all the locations, etc, that I had saved are not there. I have the old hard drive from the computer installed on the new computer as a second drive to give me access to all my old data. But I can't find the google Earth data. Anybody know exactly where Google Earth stores its user data/locations, etc?
BTW, I have tried the Google Earth folder in program files, and the application data folders in documents and settings.

Hello,
Have you checked your old hard disk drive for files with an extension of .KMZ or .KML? If so, did these contain the stored locations for your copy of Google Earth?

Yes. That is not the problem. Sorry I wasn't clear. I can't find the place to put this data. After I installed Google Earth on the new computer, I found the Google Earth folder in "Appdata" and replaced it with the old one containing the .kml files. didn't work, hence my writing. |

Hello,
Have you tried saving a location using the new computer's installation of Google Earth and then searching for the resulting .KMZ or ..KML file?

That's what I ultimately did, and my problem is solved. but the solution was a bit surprising.
Under C:\documents and settings there is the forlder for Me. under Me there are two similar folders: Application Data and AppData. The first has stuff from lots of programs, but nothing from Google. But, AppData has two folders, one called Local, and the other called LocalLow. both Local and LocalLow have folders from Google\google Earth\ in them. But only when I place my old data in the "localLow" folder does the Google earth program call them up properly.
So, the correct path for placing that data on my 64 bit machine is:
C:\documents and settings\AppData\LocalLow\Google\Google earth\. As I said, there is a similar set of files in the "Local" folder, but placing the data there doesn't cause Google earth to find it. |
