PostPosted: Sun Sep 28, 2008 9:10 pm    Post subject: Google Searches are being redirected to ad sites!?!?

Any time I run a search on google the results are automatically redirected to an ad site that is somewhat related to the search. This was seen using the Firefox browser so I tried using the IE browser. Same thing! So, I used my other computer to search for help, leading me to this site. GreyKnight17, looks like you have helped several others on this exact same issue. I have no idea how or why you do this buy would you mind helping me out as well/

I have done as you said in this post (update then run AVG, VundoFix.exe and etc.)
http://help.lockergnome.com/general/Virus-affects-Google-searches-ftop...52030.h
as well as others. However, I do no see any of the HijackThis file logs that you recommend to others in my log. Anyhow here is my HijackThis log

Is each case that you deal with specific, requiring a different files to be deleted?

I have tried to follow all of your requests. Sorry if I forgot something. Not trying to make your life any harder.

Thanks in advance!!!

The HijackThis log that I posted above was obtained while in Safe mode. Not sure how that effects which programs are running. Sorry if this was wrong.

So I just attempted to run the ComboFix program with the SP2 recovery console. It rebooted the computer and once it restarted it continued running the ComboFix program however it aborted itself during the scan stage claiming that the recovery console had already been installed!

Not knowing what this means, I went back to the bleepingcomputer website where I downloaded the ComboFix program from and there was no information on that error.

Any suggestions?

This worked for me and a few others.

The virus we had met this description. It was win32.BHO.je and effects hypertext links by attaching itself as a Browser helper object. The search links redirect to bogus antivirus software sites!!
To rid:
1. Download and install SPYBOT-SEARCH & DESTROY available download from www.safer-networking.org.
2. Click "Check for problems" This might also find much more unwanted adware, etc. In teh meantime - go get some coffee.
3. When scan finished, click "Fix Selected Problems".
4. Then totally shut down computer - count to 30 - cross your fingers and take a deep breath - relax - and restart.

- Best of luck!

Welcome to Lockergnome.

Yes, each reply I make here is basically tailored for that specific user only. There may be cases where you might have the same entries, but they should/will be different in most cases Wink

OK, let's get this started.

Please print the below instructions or copy them to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the order mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

Download Malwarebytes ' Anti-Malware at http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe or http://www.majorgeeks.com/Malwarebytes_Anti-Malware_d5756.html Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

* Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform Full Scan, then click Scan.
* The scan may take some time to finish, so please be patient.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart (see Extra Note below).
* The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
* Copy & paste the entire report into your next reply.

Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following if they still exist and hit 'Fix Checked' after you checked the last one:

Locate the following Files/Folders and delete them if they exist (if no location given, just do a search for them):

1. Download combofix at http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/sUBs/ComboFix.exe or http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe Save it to your Desktop before you run it.
2. Double-click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it will produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply.

Note:
Do not click on combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall.

Uninstall Symantec Antivirus if you want to keep AVG (which I recommend using). You should not have more than one antivirus running on a computer.

Go to Start->Run and type in regedit and hit OK. Go to File->Export and save the registry somewhere as a backup. Close the Registry Editor now. Go to Start->Run and type in notepad and hit OK. Then copy and paste the following into Notepad:

REGEDIT4
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\windows]
"AppInit_DLLs"="avgrsstx.dll"

Save the file as "delete.reg". Make sure to save it with the quotes. Close Notepad. Double click on the delete.reg file and choose Yes to merge/add it to the registry. You may delete the file afterwards.

Delete the following files:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\MSYGMUvw.ini2
C:\Program Files\avg70free_296a409.exe

Good job. Your log is clean.

To help prevent future spyware infections, read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial and use the tools provided.

Are there any problems now? If none, go to Start->Run, copy/paste in combofix /u and hit OK to remove it. You should be set to go.
