I know Chris likes RSS but..... I am not C. So, what good is it? is there any reasons why I should be useing it for say.... forums?

It is another way to view your data. I have about 50 sites that I read daily, CP has around 600, if your are trying to keep up with what's new on that many sites, it's a full time job if you have to go to each one individually, keep track of the links, and sort through the garbage to find whats important to you. If you miss a day of checking a site, you also may never find what you missed.
Using RSS, not only can you check all your sites (it takes me about an hour to gothrough all the feeds I have) much more quickly, but because of the way it is organized you can more easily find what's important to you.
If you don't read alot of site/blogs, then maybe RSS isn't necessary for you. For me, I can keep up with much more of the news, events and goings on that are important to me, than I could before.
Before RSS, it took me a couple hours just to find out about the security issues I may face at work, as well as the changing technology landscape, and I missed alot. Now because of RSS, I can keep up, and it takes less time.

YES!!!
The feed itself is just an xml document, but you can password protect it like any other page on your site (methods vary by server). So if you can password protect a page on your server you can protect the feed.
At my work, we have a feed just for our national sales force, so i used a server side password for the feed.
The issue that you will have is that not all the readers out there can handle secure feeds (most only handle it in the URL line), so you are pretty much stuck with clear text passwords, which is good enough for most purposes, unless you think someone will be trying to intercept the password to your feed. |

A good site to check it out in is http://www.bloglines.com. You can sign up for any feeds you like (for free and without downloads), and they'll even get you started with a healthy list of reccomendations.
One advantage of using an aggregator is the number of articles you no longer read a second time. We've all revisited pages before to find that there's nothing new there. RSS helps me avoid that time-waster. |
