|
|
I use BartPE boot CD for creating & restoring images of my system partition. I end up with one file 2GB in size and a second file of only about 600 to 800MB. Its as if Ghost is treating the destination partition as FAT32, where there is a limit of 2GB max filesize. This in spite of the destination being an NTFS partition where I save ISO files from dual-layer DVD's which are over 7GB.
A while ago Dr. Who posted the contents of a Ghost.INI file wherein a statement
"FATLIMIT=N" appears. I'm thinking I need to have such an INI file in the same folder as the executable, in order to get Ghost to create a single output image file.
Steer me please y'all...

| FAT32's limit is 4GB so you can't say that is the cause.
Look over your settings and be sure you have not specified to split the image up into a certain size file.

Single output file? Don't do that.
There is absolutely NO benefit to doing that.
Just let Ghost create its multiple output files.
It's designed to do that.
You can, however, change the size of the files, like to fit in
certain places, like on a CD, etc.
I have not altered the file size on my own Ghost and it's largest file is 2097mb.
and another file is created for the remainder of the data.
I use FAST compression when making backup files to a HD and HIGH compression when making my backup to a DVD.
With my C: drive (Win XP) in FAT-32 mode, I can run batch files from my Ghost boot disk to clean out all the garbage on C: before I actually run Ghost to do the backup. I decrease the amount of data going into my backup by almost 4 gig's by doing the cleanup from the Ghost boot floppy.
I delete all the old restore points and the Pagefile as part of my cleanup, before running Ghost.
If you keep your C: drive nice and clean you can get your C: backup on a single DVD with High Compression.
Works for me!

Adendum:
Having no knowledge of just what version of Ghost you're running, I just have to make some general comments.
I use Ghost 2003 and there is an Options choice somewhere in the first menu page.
If you set options and save the changes, a Ghost.ini file will be created.
Once it's created, you can make changes directly to that file without going into Options again. Or without even running Ghost for that matter.
If you're running Ghost from a CD, then you can't save anything.
Nor can you add or alter an .ini file.
I know I've said this at least a million times now, but I'll say it again,,,,
"Ghost was designed to be run from a boot floppy disk".
I still use a boot floppy for backing up my own system.
To run Ghost 11.5 and back up Vista or Win-7, I run Ghost from a bootable flash drive, because Ghost 11.5 is too big to fit on a single floppy disk.
With either the floppy or Flash Drive, I can make all the changes I want to the way Ghost runs.
To make a Ghost boot CD, I set everything up on my flash drive the way I want it and then burn it to a CD, using Nero's "Make Boot CD" function.
If I really need to change something in the .ini file, I just make the alterations on the flash drive and then burn another CD.
Works for me!
Cheers Mates!
