I am looking for a "GOOD" registsry cleaning software (if this exists). Confused I don't mind paying for the software as long as it is, of course, not terribly expensive and that it 1) not only finds "potentially" bad registry items but 2) will, when highlighted or whatever, give a good explanation of the detected error. I don't like those that detect possible problems but don't give any background (or a clue) for the user to be "somewhat" pointed in the proper direction to either remove the item or fix it (if possible). Thanks for the input. Wink

Go for safe. Registry cleaners can make your computer unusable and there are lots of horror stories scattered on the internet from users who tried a registry cleaner and discovered this.
IMHO, the safest one is CCleaner.
If English is your native tongue, you can use the slim version
http://majorgeeks.com/download4191.html

If you need additional languages then go here
http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/

It will ask if you want to make a backup before you clean the registry. Always say Yes. I've never needed to restore the registry from my backup but there is a chance I may one day have to.

First, thanks for the response Zlim.

I forget to mention in the initial post that I have been seeing responses that registry cleaners are, for the most part, usually not a necessary thing. And, that messing with the registry is not for the "faint at heart". However, for me, although I am not a technician, IT, or just plain "geeky", I still want to keep my registry as clean as possible for what it will allow me.

As for Ccleaner ... I have that but an not happy with the registry cleaner. There is no "help" or description of the entry(ies) found. For example, when I search the registry for problems in the "installer", it finds 5 "installer reference issues" and 33 "uninstaller reference issues". I cannot find any description of either installer or uninstaller reference issues and I just don't have a lot of time "googling". And, the "online help" for Ccleaner is worthless!!

Just the same ... again, thanks for the response.

CCleaner should give a full path to everything it finds. Make the window as large as possible and scrunch (note the very technical term) the first few columns so you can see the last column as much as possible. You should see the names of the programs for install and uninstall.

Zlim .... While Ccleaner does what you say, it does not describe what the problem is so that any novice can get some idea what the problem is or may be. A description of the detection would be nice. I see "installer reference error" and so, what does that mean to me?!

But anyway, thank you for responding.

Hello,

Have you tried jv16 from Macecraft Software? It is supposed to be highly rated.

I have purposely waited to see what others have to say before responding to this thread.

On some forums, you're forbidden to even suggest Registry Cleaning. It's a touchy subject indeed.

I've been a PC professional for many years and since my retirement, I've had a lot more time to "Test" different types of software.
(this post is coming to you, via Windows 7, 64bit and Firefox 3.0.8 )

When it comes to Registry Cleaning, I doubt that anyone has had more disappointments than I've had. Some rave about CCleaner, but every time I've tried it, it's corrupted my OS something terrible.
I've even spent good money, for trial software that's told me I have hundreds of registry errors, but the software refuses to fix them till I buy the program.

EDIT: I seriously doubt that any registry cleaner is going to give you an in-depth explanation of every key that it marks for deletion. In my own experience, almost all of the keys marked for deletion are keys that point to either programs or files that no longer exist. It would do you NO GOOD at all to sit and read a detailed explanation of every one of those entries. If you don't trust a program to only delete the garbage and leave the good stuff alone, then don't use that program.

Through all this trial and disappointment, one program has never failed me.
And that would be "Easy Cleaner 2". If it's going to 'error', then it errors on the side of caution. I've NEVER had it remove anything from my HD or registry that was actually needed or where the removal caused any kind of problem.

One word in the above quoted post stands out in my mind, "GOOD".
It's not good if it leaves your OS crippled.
It's not good if it disables your printer or other peripherals.
It's only GOOD if it cleans out the garbage and "Does No Harm".

I've used "Easy Cleaner" in several versions, for years and I've shared it with most of my customers and NEVER have I seen it do any harm at all.
So I'd have to say that it's "GOOD". And it's FREE. Give it a look-see!
You can download Easy Cleaner 2.0 here:
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Registry-Tweak/EasyCleaner.shtml
(the registry cleaning function, in the program, does not work properly with 64 bit OS's, like Vista 64 or Win-7 64, but the other functions, like the "Unnecessary Files" cleaner, works like a champ)

I usually follow up a Registry Cleaning with a RE-Compression of the registry with
"NTREGOPT". That too is GOOD and SAFE.

After removing Office 2007 from my own PC, I ran Easy Cleaner and then NTREGOPT and reduced the size of my registry by 30%.
That's significant because....The registry has to load into RAM memory on boot-up. Keeping the registry as small as possible saves valuable RAM and promotes faster boot times and increases the overall efficiency of the OS.

Y'all have a great day now, Y'hear?

In my honest opinion none of these is safe and sooner or later your going to get bit!
I know Doc loves Easy Cleaner2 and CC is very popular and I have used both and can tell you from personal experience
either is quite able to do much damage.
Do a disk cleanup and defrag and then benchmark your system and then run either or both of these programs and check it again.
The little if any gain is not worth the risk unless.

1. You enjoy reloading software.
2. You love reinstalling windows.
3. You have a masochistic approach to computing.
4. You are fascinated by the number of Windows updates.

Now I know your not going to listen so at the very least back up your important files and have your copy of Windows whatever handy your probably going to need it! Rolling Eyes

Due to the extreme difference in PC's and the way people use them and the software they install, it's very seldom that two people have exactly the same experience.

But unlike many (not all) posters, I don't have to just worry about my own PC's but hundreds of PC's of my customers.
I can't afford to install anything on those hundreds of PC's that would harm them in any way.
I'm just like Easy Cleaner, if I'm going to error, I must always error on the side of caution.
(I might leave something that could possibly be deleted)

But, if you DO clean your registry, you've gained little if you don't re-compress it.
If I clean a registry, I ALWAYS run "NTREGOPT" to re-compress the registry, so it will take less RAM when it installs (on boot up).

Now you have the information..... do with it as you like. Rolling Eyes
Or do nothing. Wink

Cheers Mates!
