This thread seems to be running in two places.
( And I still can't register. I'll try my daughter's machine. Maybe it doesn't like my firewall or something!). |
I've merged both here!

One thing was very strange and unnerving when I signed up for it. MS didn't detect I'm using Netscape Navigator and refuse to serve me!! Usually, I have to use IE to get in MS sites...
I'm still waiting for it to drop through my letterbox though...

I used Firefox. Seems they want to get that windows info out to everyone they can, so doesn't matter what you use to get there.

This maybe slightly OffTopic and I apologize:
IE Tab 1.0.8 FireFox Extension
| Quote: |
IE Tab, an extension from Taiwan, features Embedding Internet Explorer in tabs of Mozilla/Firefox.
This extension is derived from the famous extension IE View, but they are quite different.
While IE View always open IE-only pages in newly launched windows of Internet Explorer, IE Tab can open them in tabs of Mozilla/Firefox.
v1.0.8 What's New?
1. Add tabbar context menu items.
2. Add external application on context menu.
3. Support ietab settings import/export.
4. Add checkboxs for hidden prefs: "ietab.handleUrlBar" & "ietab.alwaysNewTab".
5. New tooltip for tool button/statusbar icon/menuitems.
6. More options for customize context menu.
7. Support external application command line parameters.
8. Improve hook method for menuitem/toolbutton events.
9. Fix some bugs on firefox 1.6a1 nightly build (ie. Find As You Type)
10. Some minor bugs fix.
Known Issues:
1. IE ActiveX's enable/disable setting NOT work
2. Script Error problem
3. Password Manager NOT work
4. Shift+Delete(Cut) NOT work
5. Button has no XP Style (theme)
6. All popup windows always open in new IE Tab
7. Navigate history list NOT support
8. SSL icon NOT support
9. Site's favicon NOT support |
This extension is beyond the "Switch UserAgent" utility for FireFox.
It has got the FdaH seal of approval as I have been using it for a month or so and seems to really work and does not bog down FF!
Down on the FF StatusBar, you get an extra icon that is the normalFF icon. When you click on it after going to a page, it switches FF to render page in a tab that is IE6. The icon in the StatusBar now changes to the IE6 icon... Pretty Trick!

Mine arrived (in the UK!) this morning, as did another (in Scotland) and a further one in Krakow, Poland! |

it is pretty funny how "we" get excited when things are FREE!
Today's Fry's ad (outpost.com) has:
*A 512MB USB FlashDrive for $14.99 USD (after rebate), and
*A 128MB USB FlashDrive for $6.99 USD (no rebate necessary)!
That is the retail cost to the Consumers... I wonder how much MicroSoft is paying when they purchase them in bulk!! |

Wow! And I thought I'd found a bargain when I bought a Gigabank 6G for $50 on a clearance table at an office supply house! Although, with Microsoft, you never know - someone might be paying them to give the things away!

Re: Free USB Drive from Microsoft !!! (U.S only)
Mine was 128 megs, although I've read some folks got 64...guess what: if one is running an illegal copy of Windows, it warns you that it phones home. MS uses greed to aid in the fight against piracy
Also, high speed users are advised to disconnect router hub cables before
plugging it in as your data will be subjected to probing...my little screamer box brought that to my attention.
I might be mistaken, but they look like rebranded IBM drives. |

Good to know- I'm not too happy to be spied upon- free drive or no...Have to try it with a Linux distro & see about wiping the little bugger (or perhaps UBCD?)...
Tracy
PS- of course, this assumes I actually get it at all? Whatever... |

Oh Boy!
I am not doubting what you are reporting to be anything but the truth!
However, I must ask if reformating this FREEbie USB SpyDrive would correct the phone home feature(s) of such a beast?
Additionally, I was not aware that IBM actually manufactured USB drives (or NAND flash)! :hmm:

| By default XP does not allow autorun to function with USB devices although some manufacturers have found a way around this. To be safe temporarily disable autorun before you insert the device. |

Hmm!
My machines don't actually have anything moody on them. But even so, since MS didn't announce in advance that these things are going to spy, I'll make sure that I'm off line before I use it, ( If it arrives) as a matter of principle.

| Think they'll actually deliver? This was posted on every deal site on the internet yesterday- lol...Oh well, only took a second to fill the form- we'll see? |
That reminds me about that Class Action Lawsuit/Settlement against MicroSoft, 2 years ago! I was supposed to get $150 back but that never happened either!
{OffTopic}Do you realize how much data MicroSoft must have on us all??
I usually don't enter such give-aways: Since MicroSoft already knows all my vital stats (probably down to shoe size and blood type), I did not feel any more threatened by releasing the private information they asked!
|
In the matter of the Microsoft Lawsuit Settlement, contact the District Court Claims Administrator. I submitted a purchase, got a check and got another coupon for the remainder of the rebate I'm due. It might depend on the state you live in. I'm in Minnesota. |

My order experience
March 22nd
- Filled out order form.
- Form would not accept City/Province/Postal Code
- Email sent to a contact/support address explaining my plight.
- Support replied with a message - contact 888-218-5617
- Unable to reach the number.
- Email to customer service for assistance - email wouldn’t go through.
March 23rd.
- Called another support number.
- Unable to help, try another number.
- Email address on support reply to send a message to another Microsoft address.
- System rejected email.
- Microsoft username/password is in order.
- OS = Win XP Sp2
While the offer was nice, I don’t think I’ll pursue it any further. I see there are some very attractive “deals” on storage devices, so will look in that direction.
Keep up the good work everyone - I appreciate the advice I see in the forum.
