Hi,

I just changed the video card in my wife's computer. She now has an ATI Radeon HD 3850 instead of an Nvidia 8600GTS.

The problem is with the font in the chat window on the Pogo game site, since the addition of the new video card the font is run together. This only occurs in the chat window, the rest of the page has the correct kerning. I can't find what the correct font should be for the chat window.

I suspect the ATI card has different font requirements, but I'm at a loss on what to do.

Any help would be appreciated.

Allo dlcampbe and welcome to the Lockergnome forum

Assuming that the PC is using WinXP, it might be worth trying the MS 'Clear-Type' utility, available from here.

This page has a download link and it will show you how to use it. It works best with flat-screen monitors, but it also works well with the older CRT monitors.

Let us know how it goes, we'll try something else, if it's still garbled Smile

Thanks for the welcome Werebo.

I used the Clear Type tool as you suggested, no change.

The curious thing about all this is that the problem is only apparent on the chat window in games accessed directly from Pogo.com. My wife has other games purchased from Oberon in conjunction with Pogo, that when played connect to the Pogo site. On those games, the chat window displays correctly.

It's as if the Radeon card renders the font used in the online Pogo chat window differently. I can't, however, identify the font used in the chat window.

Even if I reinstall the Nvidia card, I still won't know what caused this strange behavior. Maybe I shouldn't know???

Thanks for your help.

I don't know if this will work in a chat window but I'm throwing it out as an option. Right click and select "View page source". You'll get a window with lots and lots of coding. See if you can find a font anywhere.
If you find the font that the chat is using, you can substitute another font for it on your computer so it will render in your font rather than the one the chat window uses.

Thanks for the thought. I tried, but Pogo chat source info is not shown.

What's frustrating is that the chat font was rendered correctly when the Nvidia card is installed.

Have you looked on the site responsible for Pogo? They may have a help page with the answer.

I've looked through all the FAQs on the Pogo site, no help there. Pogo is owned by Electronic Arts and I'm trying to get a hint from them now.

It's just possible that the page "rendering" of the Pogo page won't work with your ATI board. Just as one game I have, and LG "first" page, won't work properly with my wide screen monitor. The game "round" items aren't, and the Lockergnome "first" page is real slow scrolling (all other LGpages are OK). Everything else works fine with the monitor!
You do have the latest ATI drivers?

The reply from EA suggests things to do that we have already tried. I also have the current drivers, although there may be something newer that I'm not aware of. I'll go look.

I have come to the conclusion that this is something we'll just have to live with.

Hello,

What brand and model of monitor is connected to the ATI Radeon HD 3850 video card in your wife's computer?

Regards,

Hi,

The monitor is a 20" Sony CPD-GS20 CRT.

Since we have done additional investigating, the problem looks like it may be associated with Java. I have a trouble report pending with them now.

Hopefully this isn't a dead topic, but I'll help with what I found.

I recently hooked up an HP laser printer, and used the installation software via HP's site. Upon going to Pogo, I also noticed a change in the chat font as well.

What I did was to right click on the game room I was in, and click on view source (don't go to a game table) and once you open that...do a search for "font"...see if it says "Arial" or "Helvetica" anywhere. If it has Helvetica, go into your font folder (make sure all pogo/internet explorer windows are closed) and delete anything associated with Helvetica (true type).

That should cure the problem, it did on my PC.
