For the past 3 weeks, I have been continually having a problem with IE6 not displaying MacroMedia Flash (*.swf) content, inside the browser.
The real problem at hand has to do with that dreaded
red-X inside IE6.
I have NOT been able to view anything that has a MacroMedia *.swf content on html pages:
FireFox works flawless but IE6 (and thus, Maxthon, as well) just gives me that dreaded
red-X on the top left corner!
Here is a list of some things that I have tried to get rid of this dreaded
red-X:
>> I have removed MacroMedia Flash Player (many ways including the tool MacroMedia makes available as an uninstaller)
>> I have reinstalled every software that MacroMedia makes available at their site
>> I have installed three different FREEware Flash Players
>> I have reinstalled (add/remove programs) all IE6 components from the WinXP OS CD
>> I have reduced ALL my IE6 security features to practically nothing
>> I have enabled every conceivable ActiveX control (and ceritificates) in IE6
>> I cleaned the IE6 history/cookies/cache many times
>> I have disabled my firewall and pop-up blockers and anti-virus software
>> I have even purged the Stand-Alone Flash Player and the plug-in made for FireFox
>> I have attempted to (IE6 Options >> Tools >> Programs >> ) "Manage Add-Ons" and enabled/disabled every single one of these add-ons
>> I updated the ActiveX controls; using this "Manage Add-Ons" screen
>> I have reset my IE6 settings to default values from the IE6 Tools Menu
>> I have attempted a System Restore point that is the oldest in my system
>> Deleted the content of "%SYSTEMROOT%\Downloaded Program Files"
>> I tried to repair by uninstalling the Flash.ocx driver
I googled many different querry strings and could not come up with any viable remedy.
Then, I googled the words "flash player internet explorer problem".
This resulted in a link to an entry (about 20th down in the list) that took me here: (http://www.macromedia.com/cfusion/knowledgebase/index.cfm?id=tn_19091)
This error can be caused by a "Kill Bit" entry installed in the Windows registry.
This type of registry entry is usually created by an ad/pop-up blocker installation.
Uninstalling the pop-up blocker will not necessarily remove this registry entry.
The link recommends 2 seperate methods to rectify the situation.
The preferred choice is to reinstall FlashPlayer. :whistling:
The other method (not recommended) is the ONLY thing that finally fixed that dreaded
red-X.
I had to manually remove the "
Kill Bit" CompatibilityFlags from inside the registry; as follows:
| Quote: |
To manually remove the "Kill Bit" entry from the registry, look for the following registry item:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\ActiveX Compatibility\{D27CDB6E-AE6D-11CF-96B8-444553540000}\
Delete this CompatibilityFlags line item in this registry section (registry item should not contain any strings. If there is a string value {1024}, it is most likely a set of CompatibilityFlags' related items) |
I hope this comes in handy for someone else, when/if they come across this bit of MacroMedia nasty!
