Get Firefox 3 beta 4 here

At your own risk

Please note: We do not recommend that anyone other than developers and testers download the Firefox 3 Beta 4 milestone release. It is intended for testing purposes only.

If you wish to also keep Firefox 2.x, you will need to make a new profile.
See http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Profiles

I think Firefox 3 will be a great upgrade on Firefox 2,
but will wait till rc1 comes out before I download it.

I've had it on PC #2 for several weeks and it's worked so good I decided yesterday to put it on PC #1.

IE Tab has already been updated for it, so I thought "OH why not?".

The install went off without a hitch and I was surprised it DID NOT over write version 2.0.0.12, which was still intact and untouched. I elected to just go ahead and remove the older version, just to eliminate any confusion. I"m using v. 3.4 as we speak. The only difference I can note is the Back/Forward buttons and other little icons in the toolbar are changed, in shape and size. No biggie!

For us who like to hop on the latest and greatest, it's a good program.

Cheers Mates!

Right, thats good Doc.
What other Add-ons are you using with Ff 3 b4 ?

Two I would miss would be Adblock Plus
and Tab Mix Plus.

I'm not real big on Add-Ons.
I think that's something that can be greatly OVER DONE!

I get only what I really need.
I currently have AdBlock+,
NoScript and I.E. Tab

The first two are just to keep the dam'd ads from this forum from taking over my screen. Twisted Evil

This is the worse forum out of a dozen or more that I work, for the blasted ads wanting to take over my screen. Evil or Very Mad
God, I hate that!!!! Twisted Evil

I would agree with you that it is a vastly different forum with AdBlock Plus. Laughing

Well I'll try Ff 3 b4.

But first I will backup my profile using the Add-on FEBE just in case.

The FF beta, WILL NOT overwrite FF 2.0.0.12.

Give it a try.

Spent about 20 minutes trying to find the Back/Forward buttons. Crying or Very sad

Realised, eventually, that they are on the navigation toolbar
which I do not use. Embarassed

So opened that bar, pulled them up to top bar, and closed the navigation bar.

Talk about noob's

Well, had 2 crashes, after scratching the head for a while, decided that I had downloaded the wrong version,[English-US].
So uninstalled that, rebooted, and downloaded the English-English version that my Ff 2 was setup for.

Now that's better.. Very Happy

I'll wait until the final version is released, mainly because I have about 80 add-ons and not all will be compatible with FF3 yet. Also, I've found that the first few releases of a new version for Linux can be a bit buggy. That's probably due to the fact that there are more than 1,000 variations of Linux that it has to work with, while there are only half a dozen or so versions of Windows they need to test new releases on.

BTW, FF2 has just been updated to v2.0.0.13. A few security fixes in this one.

80 Add-ons, wow Shocked

Your personalised Firefox must be approaching IE in size Laughing

How much memory do you have installed in your Linux machine ?

Thanks for the heads up on the security updates for Ff2.

I'm running a 2.4GHz Celeron with 768 MB of RAM. I also have 1 GB swap (disk) memory, but that doesn't get used very much (maybe 200 MB when I have a lot of programs open and am loading big pages on Firefox) Very Happy .

I did get rid of one add-on tonight as it's now built-in to Firefox. From what I've read so far, I think FF3 will allow me to remove quite a few more.

Like that female comedian likes to say, "Can we talk?"

You know of course that a Celeron is the lowest performance CPU that Intel makes. It's the Yugo of the CPU world! (very low, or NO cache) Laughing Laughing Laughing

And that RAM! Way below minimum standards for XP.
Or are you still running Windows 98?
768 megs ain't bad for '98. Rolling Eyes

Guys and dolls, PM me if you'd like to donate to SeaEagles RAM fund. Wink

Just joking, of course.... more or less Twisted Evil

Actually, 768 MB of RAM is more than adequate for my Mandriva Linux:

System Requirements - Mandriva Linux
Quote:
Mandriva Linux is compatible with a huge range of hardware, helping to ensure your experience will be a good one.

CPU: Any Intel or AMD processor - dual-core supported

RAM: 256 MB minimum, 512 MB recommended

DVD drive required

Video Card: NVIDIA, ATI, Intel® i8xx and i9xx, SIS, Matrox, VIA. 3D desktop features requires NVIDIA GeForce or later, ATI Radeon 7000 or later, or Intel i810 to i965.

Sound Card: Any Sound Blaster-compatible card and AC97 – please note that Creative Labs X-Fi cards are not currently supported.

Minimum hard disk space: 3GB for a smooth installation- 4GB if you plan to use KDE 4.

Serial ATA: Most controllers supported in non-RAID mode and some in RAID mode.

I don't have a separate graphics card, so I can't run the 3D desktop. But aside from that, my system does everything I want it to quickly and efficiently.

I know the Celeron isn't the best CPU for Windows, but it is quite suitable for Linux. Especially someone like me who is not doing high-end processing work. A Pentium may speed things up a little, but I probably would not notice the difference.

At the moment I am editing 2 wallpaper images in The GIMP, I've got Firefox open, my Kontact email/organiser running, a video playing, and a few other things running in the background. Yet I've still got 20% of my system memory free.

Being on the pension, I could not afford a high-end PC when I bought this one 3 years ago. So I went for the best hardware I could get with what I had in the bank, and installed a free operating system (Linux). There is no way I could afford to buy a PC + Windows - the cost is out of my reach (and I wouldn't want Windows anyway - it's garbage compared to Linux).

You know of course, that I was just kidding.... right? Laughing Laughing Laughing

But thanks for the rundown anyway.
All my customers run some version of MS Windows, so I'm pretty well stuck with that OS. (both XP and Vista)

Cheers Mate!

I was fairly sure you knew I hadn't used used Windoze for years, but I'm always happy for an opportunity to promote a free alternative operating system that I consider to be far better than the bloated, restrictive stuff that Micro$oft dumps on it's users.

Hopefully one day you will be able to break free. I don't know about your personal situation, but Linux (being free) is perfect for retirees and others on a limited income. Not just because it is free, but also because it runs on older PC's with limited memory and slower CPUs. There are a lot of people out there who can't afford a PC with 2 GB of RAM and a high-end CPU. But they can afford 2nd-hand PCs, often being sold or given away because they can't run the latest versions of Windows. Those PCs are perfect for Linux.

Cheers Matey Very Happy

OH....being retired myself, I'm very familiar with pensions.

Probably 90% of my customers are also on some kind of pension.
Many get multiple pensions and live quite nicely.

The secret to living good on a limited pension is to find something that you can do to supplement your income.

Some do tax returns for other people,
some pick up aluminum cans along the road,
some buy and sell merchandise over the internet,
and some have turned their computer hobby into an income,
doing repair work for friends and neighbors.

ME? I just fix peoples computers.
It's what I've done most of my adult life, so it just seems the obvious thing to do.
On my OFF days, I just sit here, saving money and harassing people on the internet. Wink Laughing Laughing Laughing

Too bad you're not in my neighborhood..... I could fix you up with a much better computer. Rolling Eyes

Cheers Mate!

If you are happy to pay for the shipping from Florida to Sydney, I might take up your offer of a better computer. But taking it to you for service could be a problem for me. Laughing

I'm quite happy with what I've got at the moment. After all, you don't need a Ferrari if you just drive to the local shops each week. I might look at upgrading next year - there's a great little computer shop down the road near Sydney Airport that sells PCs at near cost. He makes his main income from system administration, repairs & website building, and sells PC systems just as a sideline. Sometimes "the little guy" can do a much better deal than the big conglomerates, and this is one such case.

The good thing is that he has no problems selling PCs without an operating system pre-installed. It's hard to get a "naked" PC through the major stores these days.

I supplement my pension by earning money through my wallpapers site. It makes me about $50 a month at the moment (but is rising). That covers the cost of my Internet access, and I have also learnt a lot about HTML coding in the process, which will come in useful as I plan on building discount websites for those on low incomes as a sideline.
