After burning data to a CD-Rw on my dell Dim 8100 w/ XP i can read the disc and can read the disc on my older Compaq with 98, but when i take the disc to a friends E-Machine with XP the disc shows NO files - is this a setting problem on the e machine or a compatability issue between the differant CD drives . All oponions will be appreciated !

Your friend will have to download a reader from the software vendor that you are using, such as Nero, Roxio ..etc.

On the EMachine you may wish to also enable 'show all files' in Folders - Control Panel.

And try what Sip suggests also.

And what kind of files are these, data, music.......let us know. Smile

What Rons said was correct, "show all files"

XP does not need a 3rd party software to read a CD. Roxie/Nero are for writing (I currently have neither on my XP Home PC and drag & drop files just fine).

I'd vote for the settings.

Of course XP doesn't need anything to read a CD, but it could very well need a driver to read a UDF formatted CDRW. Depends on how the CDRW was written.

Explorer's not showing any files because it has no idea how to read the format of the CDRW.

With the cost of CDs these days, I've almost totally given up on RW, until I get my MP3/CDRW compatible car stereo that is....

XP will read and even erase re-rwitable CD's (it's in the help files)
