Google was no help so here it is...

I can't seem to get fedora 7 to shut off my computer at shutdown.
Tried every command I could think of & the best I can get is a system halt (so I can hit the power button & shut it off myself)
Read that it is a "BUG" - regard, does anyone know of a fix?

Also, I tried to set for auto login but nothing seems to make it work - had this working in FC5 - is there a difference in F7?

You probably have an old BIOS (pre 2000). Boot with the ACPI=force parameter.

Thanks for the info - I think I tried this & didn't help - can't remember for sure as I had two kernels to choose from & took the other. Fixed the shutoff but still no auto logon - would be nice if all worked but this arrangement I can live with so left well enough alone.

May try it & see as time allows just in case I didn't.

Auto-login can probably be set within your X-Desktop (maybe KDE or Gnome).

Actually the halt command is not supposed to power off. you have to use -p switch for powering off the machine after system is halted. The command
Code:
poweroff
is same as
Code:
halt -p
.

I never said I just halted the machine - I looked up the commands that were to shut down NOT halt the machine.
Used the "poweroff" & I think the "halt -p" (plus a few others) none gave the desired result. - & I fixed it by switching kernals as I posted.

I think the "ACPI=force" is my best bet as this IS an old machine. But right now, I don't have the time to mess with it & it isn't a big issue for me. - I will try the latter when time permits.

Like I said, I HAD the auto logon working in FC5 - so as far as the "how to's" I'd THINK they would be virtually the same. But I also know that they have a tendency to change things.

Thanks to all, anyway...
