| If you want some superb Itallian food and a cozy atmosphere without breaking the bank, try Sam & Gabes out. This is a favorite place for my wife and I to dine.

| Another favorite place, but a bit on the pricey side is
Fratello’s in West Des Moines. The food is great and the atmosphere of the lounge is warm. I'm going to sound like an Iowa Hick to some, but the fact that this is a piano bar is so cool to me, I love to visit there.

| If you visit my hometown in Ankeny (about a 10 minute drive north of Des Moines) check out Bear's for some good eats! This is a local favorite in Ankeny. |

Another Ankeny favorite is Chip's restaurant. It's next to a hotel just off the interstate. The spinach artichoke dip for their homemade chips is awesome!
If you want some awesome Thai food in Ankeny, Siam is an excellent choice!
I'll mention some non-Ankeny choices for future posts. |

Back to downtown Des Moines, Allie's has the best prime rib I've ever tasted. I'm talking cut with your fork meat that melts in your mouth!
Update: I went there yesterday and sampled their breakfast buffet. This is truly a top-notch place! |

I found a good resource here. The site has fairly accurate ratings of the restaurants from the few that I looked at.
Nearby towns mentioned on the site that would be a short hop away (within about 15 miles) include West Des Moines, Urbandale, Ankeny, Clive, Indianola, Altoona and Johnston. The first four are scrunched together so close that I often am unsure which city I'm in, BTW. |

Let's see. I was born and raised in West Des Moines, and moved away about 7 years ago. When I think of Des Moines and places I'd like to eat again, I think of junk food. We had some great places in DM. Tasty Taco, for example. Is it still there? Any taco joint that fries their tortillas is all sorts of good with me. I also have many a fond memory of George the Chili King. An old school drive up. Great burgers and chili.
I miss the pizza of The Tavern, Noah's and Big Tomato (is that what it's called)?
The Waterfront Seafood Market in WDM is still one of my favorite places to go when I'm back in town. Weirdly enough, since I left for Boston and now Oregon, the best clam chowder and salmon sandwiches came from this restaurant.
That's all I have for now, I'm sure I'll come up with more soon. |

Aagggaauuuugh... *Homer Simpson drooling sound* George the Chili King... oh, heavenly grease!
Other good places that I dearly miss (I'll second some that have been mentioned):
Sam and Gabe's (in Clive)
801 Steak and Chop House (downtown DM)
Chat Noir (in DM)
Christopher's (in DM)
Paradise Pizza (in WDM)
J Benjamin's or B&BQue (in DM, both owned and operated by one of Chris's cousins)
And for massive family style Italian, there's Buca di Beppo's out in WDM, and of course the ever-popular Ohana Steakhouse! |

Yumm. If you really want a treat, head up the road to Marshalltown, Ia. I'm more that slightly predjudice as I was raised in Marshalltown, but try these places anyway. You can't go wrong.
First, try Stones, down near the old railroad yard. This is an outstanding (and world famous) restraunt that still retains a very afordable and varied menu. They have a Sunday buffet that is easy on the wallet, but not on the waistline. Be certain to leave room for their outstanding Lemon Merangue pie! Each slice is a piece of heaven.
If you are merely looking for a great sandwich (not to mention home-made pie, chocolate malts, etc.) drop in to Taylor's Maide Rite. This cool little establishment was founded in the late 1950's and features the famous Taylor's Maide Rite sandwich. The "Maide Rite" is a "loose-meat" sandwich made of very lean ground beef that is locally prepared specifically for Taylors. Warning. You can't have just one. |
