A friend of mine recently received the e-mail below, which to all intents and purposes looked very authentic, he was going to do as asked, but decided to check with me first to see if it was spam or some scam, after a little investigation, I noticed it was not an official mail and thought you may want to see it.

The address "http://scgi.ebay.com/verify_id=ebay&user=00626654" actually resolves to some home users address.

Code:

Your friend should report it to ebay. They have a fraud department that requests members forward this time of e-mail to them. Strangely enough, when I forwarded a similar e-mail to the fraud department, they replied telling me it was a fraud and not to reply to it. Ummmm, yeah, ok. I knew it was a fraud - that was why I sent it to the fraud department. Ah, I guess maybe you can send one there to find out IF it's a fraud or not. (I didn't think of that.)

Almost got caught out too wiith a similar 99%+ realistic mail. Simple solution is two - fold. 1/ Download and instal the eBay toolbar, from the eBay site. It's a pain, but once it's installed, it will alert you automatically if you are lead to a 'spoof' link / site again. 2/Alternatively, IGNORE THE MESSAGE AND GO TO THE EBAY SITE! ... NOT by following a link, but by enetering the address yourself, ie www.ebay.co.uk, or whatever. IF they have mailed you, there will invariably be a warning waiting for you as you log in to 'My eBay' ... otherwise, ignore the contents of the mail, and forward it to eBay via their site, which has a link for that specific purpose.

Unfortunately, this crap can be very, very realistic, and often asks you to verify your account details. The supplied link leads you to a page that looks totally authentic, and asks you for details that you've already supplied ... BUT, it typically asks for your credit card PIN number too!!! DO NOT GIVE IT ... NOT EVEN YOUR OWN BANK WOULD ASK FOR IT!

Good luck, and take care!

Actually, the scgi.ebay.com address results in a connection refused. This is because scgi does not respond to http requests (that I'm aware of), only https requests.

With respect to the previous behavior, taking you to "some home users address":

1. The original email may have used Javascript or other tricks to make it LOOK like you're clicking on an scgi.ebay.com address. Classic spoofing.
2. The scgi.ebay.com address may have - via some bug now corrected - redirected the user to a fraudulent host.
3. The eBay Toolbar, as previously mentioned, would have detected your use of your eBay password on a non-eBay site. http://www.ebay.com/toolbar is the way to go.

Happy eBaying,

Mark

To blame e-bay or paypal for your misadventures is just plain wrong. I have bought and sold many different product and items and 99.9% of all transactions have went through very smoothly. When bidding be sure to read the feedback for a particular seller. If their feedback contains more than 1 or 2 negatives...BEWARE. I have never had a problem with paypal and that is all I use for my buying and selling transactions. Educating yourself as to how to use either is the key to a successful transaction. I have talked with paypal people on the phone and have got nothing but fine service and at times they have gone overboard to correct a problem that I created myself.
