From Wikipedia
Porridge, a British situation comedy 1974 to 1977... Written by Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais, it stars Ronnie Barker and Richard Beckinsale as two criminals in the fictional HMP Slade in Cumberland.
"Doing porridge" was British slang in the 1970s for a spell of imprisonment, as porridge was once a traditional breakfast in UK prisons.
In a 2004 BBC poll of the 100 greatest British sitcoms,
Porridge was voted number seven.

ESCAPE TOOLS
Inmates have got lots of time on their hands.
What better way to make use of this resource
than doing handicrafts?
Creativity pays, especially when it facilitates
escape.
These examples bear witness to man’s
love of freedom.
