I have just upgraded to Windows 7 Pro from WinXP sp3. After upgrading, I cannot get either one of my CD/DVD units to work. They obviously woked when I upgraded caused I used a CD.
When I go to device manager it tells me that the drivers did not load because they either were corrupted or missing but when I try to upgrade the drivers it tells me the best drivers are already being utilized.
Help!! what do I do next?
Thanks for any help |

Windows 7 DVD Drive Not Working or Missing:
1. Click Start, and then click All Programs.
2. Click Accessories, and then click Run.
3. Type regedit, and then click OK. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow.
4. In the navigation pane, locate and then click the following registry subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
5. In the right pane, click UpperFilters. You may also see an UpperFilters.bak registry entry. You do not have to remove that entry. Click UpperFilters only. If you do not see the UpperFilters registry entry, you still might have to remove the LowerFilters registry entry. To do this, go to step 8.
6. On the Edit menu, click Delete.
7. When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
8. In the right pane, click LowerFilters.
9. On the Edit menu, click Delete.
10. When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
11. Exit Registry Editor.
12. Restart the computer. |

Thanks for your suggestion, unfortunately it didn't work. As a matter of fact, my computer would not start without doing a repair.
So, I'm still trying to find a way to get this darn computer to recognize my CD/DVD drives.
Thanks again

Can you explain this further.
We really do not have enough details to offer good suggestions.
It might also be possible that your CD/DVD died or the cable died - it happens.
I once upgraded my RAM and after one boot, the power supply decided to die. I had no idea if the RAM caused the problem or something else. Since I have no tools to test the power supply, I took the computer to a mom and pop place and had them test the power supply. It was dead. Once replaced, the computer worked fine so my suspicion of the RAM was wrong. |

Hello,
If you go into the Device Manager (filename: DEVMGMT.MSC) and uninstall both of your DVD-ROM disc drives and reboot, are they then detected the next time you log in?
Regards,

Thank you all for your recommendations. I found a fix right in Windows 7, imagine that!!
Anyhow, I did get them both up and running with a program built into Windows 7 and am now very happy.
I'm still learning about Win7, so I'm not sure whether I like it any better than XP, but since MS isn't going to support XP soon, I decided it was time for an upgrade.
Again, thank you all that responded

I had to go to Control Panel, under "Hardware and Sound", "add a device" and both of my drives appeared. All I had to do was click on the device I wanted to add (as it showed up in a window) and it was added. So simple, but I had to go to Windows Knowledge Base to find this fix.
Thanks again everyone

I'm not sure where you got this information but it is not entirely accurate. Granted you will no longer be able to call MS for support; but since most people don't call MS, this is not a problem.
Microsoft will continue to issue patches and security updates through April 2014. It is called extended support.
My windows 2000 computers are on extended support until July of this year.
I will try and locate the table that shows the timeline for the support options and post the link.
http://support.microsoft.com/gp/lifeselect
click on XP and you can see the table here
http://support.microsoft.com/lifecycle/?LN=en-us&x=8&y=13&p1=3223
Since keeping the OS patched is important, you will be good until April 8, 2014 when you get the final update/patches as this is the second Tuesday of the month. |
