Nice to be here again.
Every time I start up Windows XP on my PC, and whatever user account I use, the My Documents of the user account opens up automatically. I've asked this question here before, and I've already done the following:
- Scanned for spyware. Result: none found
- Scanned for viruses. Result: none found
- Checked msconfig for suspicious programs in the startup list. Result: none found (My startup list consists of Microsoft AntiSpyware, AVG, Clip-o-matic, and Google Desktop)
One time, I noticed that when we didn't turn on the PC for a few days, the problem disappeared when we turned it back on, but it immediately reappeared after the next startup.
It's pretty much automatic for me and my family to close the darn My Documents window every time we use the PC, and I suppose none of us are really that worried about it. But it is strange. Could it be a hardware thing? What else could I do to troubleshoot this little problem? |

| You can rule out a hardware problem since it opens with Windows - there is no way that hardware could force this to happen.
Navigate to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup and see if there is anything like "explorer.lnk" or "explorer shortcut" or anything like that in there. Delete it. If you have doubts write back with the contents of that folder.

This is strange. I can't account for it.

I knew someone here had a similar problem in the past. Searching took me to this fix

problem: My Documents opens up on your screen at Windows startup and there seems to be no obvious reason for this.
The answer is a corrupted registry entry.
Run regedit and navigate to:
HKLM/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Windows NT/CurrentVersion/Winlogon
In there there should be a value (on right hand side of screen) called Userinit.
The data for this value is probably something similar to:
C:\windows\system32\userinit.exe,C:\windows\system32\userinit.exe,
If you do see a duplicated string in there similar to the above - simply double click on the Userinit value and edit the data so as to delete everything to the right of the first comma (,). In the case above you would leave only:
C:\windows\system32\userinit.exe,
Exit registry edit and reboot. No more My Documents! |

I thought of a registry problem too. I just wanted to try the simplest solution first. We had an occasion where that actually was the problem - an overzealous tech put a shortcut in the startup folder. I still can't account for this, though:

User reporting error, probably. (No offense intended, focoma, but it happens.) |

Thanks zlim! I wonder why that happened, though. |

| Just a quick thought - have you tried the above suggestions in Safe Mode as Administrator? |
