I installed some programs to test / try & I noticed that there are folders left behind, (For example, home/"my login name"/.wine) --- AFTER doing a remove.

So, how would I go about doing a disk clean up? I know I could just delete them (provided there is nothing needing them) But how do I know if they are needed & if there is any I don't know about? Is there a command for this or a program that I'm overlooking? - Did a google & came up empty.

Funny, I was under the impression that Linux was better than this at cleaning up this stuff. One thing I always hated about M$.

Thanks in advance...

The .wine folder is where the Windows programs you install under your profile using Wine are located. Even if you remove Wine, it still keeps that folder as it is considered user data, not system files. You can delete the .wine folder without harming your system. If you reinstall Wine later, it will recreate the folder the first time you run it.

I know that Fedora uses Gnome, but if you do have KDE installed (or at least the necessary libraries), then KleanSweep would be the program you need to clear out the clutter:
Quote:
KleanSweep allows you to reclaim disk space by finding unneeded files. It can search for files basing on several criterias; you can seek for:
* empty files
* empty directories
* backup files
* broken symbolic links
* broken executables
* dead menu entries (.desktop files pointing to non-existing executables)
* obsolete thumbnails (thumbnails of non-existing images)
* duplicated files
* orphaned files (files not found in RPM or DEB database).

I've used it a few times and it does a very good job.

Thanks - I'll check it out! - I am using Gnome but it may still work for me.

I KNEW there had to be SOMETHING. It may have a bad example to have used wine as I have some games, too but I have a feeling the same applies.

Tried it & it DID list a lot of stuff. Most I KNOW I had better leave alone but in the empty files list I am not sure what would be safe. As for the files in question that I wanted to get rid of, they weren't even listed. So, for now any way, I'll just leave well enough alone.

Why I am trying this in the first place is that I am limited on disk space so if I get down to NEEDING the space, I'll move those folders to the other drive I have installed for backups & see what happens. Unless it "hoses" my OS I can always put them back if needed.

Again, Thanks
