Hi.
Cannot access "disc cleanup". Have followed Google advice ie type clean into the start menu search box but cannot find the word :disc cleanup" as they say I should. Any assistance appreciated.

If you are using windows..
go to Start > left click on Help and Support
and in the Help and Support Centre page that comes up
put disc cleanup in the search box
click the arrow.

Some things never change.

Disk Cleanup is in the same place it's been since Windows 98.

START > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup.

When run in it's generic form, Disk Cleanup will only address a few folders that contain junk.

If you'll run it in its 'Extended' form, much more garbage will be removed.
Here is the shortcut you can put on your desktop to run Disk Cleanup in the Extended mode:

%SystemRoot%\System32\Cmd.exe /c Cleanmgr /sageset:35 & Cleanmgr /sagerun:35

Copy the blue line and paste it into a new Desktop Shortcut, for a greatly more efficient Disk Cleanup.

On first run, check every item except "Setup Logs".

Good Luck,

Thanks Zlim,
That's absolutely correct.

But.......If you'll just use the Extended Disk Cleanup shortcut, that I already gave you, you won't have to worry about where it's actually located. Mox Nix!

In XP, it's exactly where I said it is.
In Vista or Win-7, I'm not so sure, but the shortcut works a treat on either of them.

Doc Cool

EDIT:
OK, I'll play your silly games.
I just rebooted into Windows 7 (much like Vista ) and checked out the location of "Disk Cleanup".
Here is the exact path:
START > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup

Yes Doc,
but you probably know that we novices can do strange things... Very Happy

On my computer, using XP Home, my path is
START > All Programs > Utilities > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup

I may have discovered why yours is different kenmabmcc.
I'm using the classic menu in XP Home and Pro. From my reading, it appears that the default XP install has a Utilities item that does not appear in the classic menu.

drwho07, I haven't looked at Windows 7. Does it also offer a classic menu or does it on a clean install appear similar to windows 2000?

Gee I thought Ken's problem was just because he lives in KIWI land. Razz Laughing Laughing
Everything Down Under is just a little different! Wink Rolling Eyes Laughing Laughing

When a person with a problem refuses to do what every forum requires, and give us all the info on the system, like which one of the many versions of Windows is being used and in what theme, then we're all left guessing and playing 20 questions. It really does make a difference. Wink

On any OS before Win-7, including Vista, I always shift into Classic mode for all menus and screens. It makes it more user friendly for people already familiar with the older versions of Windows.
You DO have to put "My Computer" on the desktop first, or it becomes hidden and cannot be accessed at all.
However, the "Windows + E" key combination still works to bring it up on the screen, just like in every version of Windows.

So far, my experience with Windows 7, is that there is NO classic mode, at least within the Beta or RC1 versions.

There are many things that I've grown to use and love in earlier version of Windows that are just NOT THERE in Windows 7.
It figures that M$ would take out the good ol' stuff and leave in the CRAP.

Has anyone even tried the "Extended Disk Cleanup" shortcut that I posted?

I set it up as a part of a "Weekly Maintenance Routine" on every computer that I set up or tune-up. "Works for Me!"

Cheers Mates!

I've been around here for a while now.
Anyone who's ever read me, knows that I like things to be simple.

I use over a dozen batch files and scripts to set up a new computer. That makes a long job take a lot less time. (Simple)

I run a batch file in my startup folder, to clean out all the main junk folders, and I run a script to force a new restore point.
Then I use a Quick Shutdown shortcut to shut down my PC.
I even have an alternate shutdown routine that backs up all the new or changed files in "My Documents", to a like space on my second HD and then shuts down the PC.

If I'm going to do anything more than twice, I write either a script of batch file to automate it. (Simple)
That's the whole idea behind desktop shortcuts.
(to simplify the running of programs)

The writers of Windows, were very good to allow for alternate means to run Windows programs. (like, shutdown and Disk Cleanup)

Windows has many defaults that make running windows slow and klunky.
Like, they left the Kernel on the HD instead of loading it into RAM on boot-up, which can make accessing it, a thousand times (or more) faster.

If you have plenty of RAM, then asking windows to load its Kernel into ram on boot can greatly increase the speed and performance of the system.
I've been using that tweak since first installing Windows XP, several years ago now.

Sorry, didn't mean to go off on a tangent.

How about sharing some more of those batch files you use.

Hmmmmm!

I think the site as given no longer exists.

However, much of the same info can be found here:

http://drwho.geek.im

But just tell me what kind of batch file that you need and I'll see if I can find it for you. If I don't have it, I'll help you write your own.
