I use a USB mouse with my Sony laptop so I find the touchpad a nuisance. I can't find any way to disable the Alps Pointing device when I have the USB mouse connected. In Hardware/Device Manager there is no option to disable the touchpad. I'd be grateful for ideas.

On my Toshiba, it's a Toshiba utility in the Control Panel that allows me to shut off the Alps touchpad. I'm not sure if Sony offers the same type of utility. I too use a USB mouse when I'm at home, but I also use a wireless keyboard, so I never bother to disable the touchpad. That way it's immediately available when I'm on the road and use the regular keyboard. I suppose as a last resort you could uninstall the Alps driver when you want to kill the touchpad, and reinstall it when you need it. But if you do that, every time you start Windows, it will bring up the New Found Hardware wizard and try to reinstall the driver.

Hello,

Is there an option in the Toshiba laptop's BIOS to disable the ALPS touchpad?

My HP Pavilion has a little button just above the touchpad that switches it off and on.

Aryeh, no, but there's also an on-off option in the Control Panel in the Mouse control section. And no physical switch on Toshiba either.

Hello,

Oops, I mis-combined two message in the thread--I meant the original poster's SONY VAIO laptop.

Goto Alps website download the drive and disable from within the installed driver. Was the only way I could get it gone on an old FX210 lol

It's amazing how you miss the obvious! I've just found an icon on my Sony laptop labeled 'Sony Notebook Setup'. Under the Device tab there is a check box to disable the Pointing Device !!!
Doh! Very Happy
