I've just bought a new PC with WinXP SP1 and I'm having problems with IE's dial-up manager. Everytime I try to dial-up, instead of my seven-letter password being there, there is this sixteen-letter password in its stead. I have no idea what this uber-long password is and I want to know why it just won't disappear.

It is encrypted by Windows automatically so that someone looking over your shoulder or using your system can not guess what your password is - by the number of letters or numbers that were used.

You should be jumping for joy over this feature since it is likely the only thing that is secure in Windows XP!LOL Laughing

Rons,

What good does it do for the user to have a 16 character password that he doesn't know?

If it fills in automatically, he has no protection..

The password could only be 1 digit long but XP will still show it as 16 characters when the window pops up. It's just a security function so no one can see what it is. You still have the option of actually typing the password in.
