OK....one of my clueless friends is asking me for help again (dang....oh well).
She is asking me how to find her IP Address. She has a videoPhone (excellent for Deaf folks- some states give 'em away heh...) and wants to give a friend her IP address. Now how she's managed to have her dear hubby call her I have no idea but I digress....
I've found the instructions for how to find it using RUN>CMD and also several sites that showw you your IP Address...
I tested all of them on my machine (DSL) but I noticed that the one listed in CMD was different than the one found on the websites (ipchicken.com and whatismyipaddress.com). Which is the correct one to go by for someone to use to call her on her videophone?
I also read that the IP address can be different if there is a network. Had to email her about THAT because I can't remember....if I remember correctly- her desktop is in one room and her videophone connected to her laptop is in another roombut on the same Cable line)
Thanks Much! |

This small and handy freeware utility might be the answer, as it shows you both the internal as well as the external IP-address when working behind a router (or similar).
It also tells about any changes made to the same:

www.ipchicken.com is the one that has never failed me. Also remember that her ip addy can also change from time to time depending on her isp and should she make it right one time then it fail another that could be the problem.
I have that problem with my webcam uploading to my site. The ip address I have is rarely supposed to change but so far it's about every other month. I don't call that rare....but I deal with it and ipchicken has never failed to give me the correct info. |

Thanks all. I gave her the ipchicken one.
The way it is set up is that she has Cox Cable and originally only had the desktop. She then added the laptop attached to the videophone and it is networked (I am guessing it is wireless I forgot to ask...but there is a router in play)
Would the ipchicken one work jsut as well under the network? I may give her the free utility mentioned above. I assume that the external IP address would be the one that is needed for others to call her.
EDIT: Ah never mind....I got the answer from USASMA's link. exactly what I needed to know as I was getting confused wth the router business being thrown in.
:w00t: <----me after Thanksgiving in overdrive...and Christmas yet to come...:sigh: |

Hello,
One thing for your friend to keep in mind is if she has an internal network with a router between the cable modem and the computers in the house then typing "IPCONFIG from a Command Prompt (filename: CMD.EXE) will never work because the IP address displayed will be the one used for the computer on the internal network and not the one from the Internet service provider, which gets assigned the router, instead.
As has been noted, there are various utilities one can run and web sites one can visit to find out this last public IP address before the router takes over to provide the internal network connections.
It is possible the router may require additional configuration to allow the video phone to work. If that is the case, the router or video phone manufacturer should be able to tell her the needed steps.
Regards,
Aryeh Goretsky |

MicroSoft had originally made an IP configuration utility for the WinNT OS but it is a very reliable and simple utility that is still available for download (not to dis any of the great suggestions put forth here).
"winipcfg.exe" is the name of the program and I have been using for too many years to try anything else out as I know it to be very reliable but as goretsky already has noted, use care if if you are inside a (DSL) network or WiFi configuration or using a proxy.
http://compnetworking.about.com/od/windows...l/aa080602a.htm
But cat5e's suggestion of IP2 FREEware appears to be much better than my old relic.
Thank you! |
