Embarassed My Dell Latitude C540/C640 Laptop computer has quit working. The green light on the A/C adaptor keeps flashing but no power is getting to the computer.I took out the main battery and run off Ac power .Still no result.

Hello,

Given the age of this notebook (some six years old) it is likely the internal battery which backs up the BIOS settings to CMOS memory and powers the real time clock has failed. Dell has a manual here on their web site explaining how to replace the 'reserve' battery (some disassembly required), You can probably find a replacement reserve battery through your favorite search engine or price comparison shopping web site.
