Defender says that definitions haven't been updated in 41 days but when I check for definitions it says none are available. I've seen the solution some where but can't remember where.Any one know what the problem is?

Do this
Quote:
Remove the current signature file. To do this, click Start, click Run, type Msiexec /x {A5CC2A09-E9D3-49EC-923D-03874BBD4C2C}, and then click OK.

Then open Windows Defender and check for updates.

I thought I'd update this thread.
I've been struggling to get Defender (Not the Beta) to update definitions and found a solution.
Defender had come up with the annoying exclamation mark in the system tray icon, but when I ran the update it would grey out for a while and then come back exactly the same. Not updated at all.
I was about to remove it completely, but thought I'd try the support option in the remove programmes section.
And I noticed a rebuild option.
A rebuild, and a reboot and the definitions updated.
Don't expect an explanation. Just WINDOWS.

If your Defender is version 1.1.1592.0, it's out of date and needs to be UN-Installed.

Open Defender, Click Help and then click About, to see the version number.

Then download and install the new version 1.1.1593.0 and start the updating process all over again.

Cool

I have the latest version.
I just think that Defender is from Microsoft.

I'm curious why anyone is still running "Defender" anyway. It's been released that Defender is really meant for Vista, and is only 30% effective when used on XP. There are so many more out there that don't have the Microshaft stamp.

Hello,

According to this page on Microsoft's web site, Windows Defender works with both Microsoft Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 and the program is based on GIANT Company's anti-spyware program, which had a good reputation. An OEM version of the program is still sold by Sunbelt Software as CounterSpy (which runs under Windows 98 and higher, according to this page).

I can think of three reasons off the top of my head as to why someone would want to run Windows Defender on their computer:

  • It is free.
  • It works well with (i.e., does not conflict with) other security programs.
  • Having it in place does provide an additional layer of protection, allowing the computer owner to build a defense-in-depth plan.

I should mention that I actually work for a company which competes against Microsoft in the security space, so please take my bias into consideration.

Regards

When the various 'Beta' versions of Defender were available, they caused all sorts of hiccups to my and my wife's PC's. Now the final version has been around for a while, I've removed that too but for different reasons.

I installed the final version of M$ Defender, and my PC's no longer hang or freeze on me, but it blocked waaaaaay too many sites that I needed to access. Mrs WereBo couldn't get into her online craft classes or her various user-groups on Google, Yahoo etc., and it was blocking me from various sites that I needed to access for my research either for here (Lockergnomes) or some other forums I belong to. Always the same message, 'The host is responding, but a connection cannot be established'.....

Personally M$ Defender can take a long walk off a short pier, never again!!! Evil or Very Mad.
