I've become sickened by how much our common language is being neglected/abused
in this forum.

I know your slip is far from the worst example (surely you meant to say "...have begun to spiral...") Debora,
but I would have expected better from a Mod.
We who post here, must be from a reasonably educated background,
we're all able to read and write.
Or perhaps I'm mistaken, maybe the "TV" society with all it's crappy,
lazy habits has become the norm..... |

I apologize, and did not mean to offend you.....
However, one should not throw stones if one lives in a glass house....
Your original post: "I know you probably meant "...HAVE become...etc."
You had a chance to correct yours and so shall I..... |

I also noticed that you were kind enough not to point out the punctuation gaffs, run on sentences, etc. |

| I've often been tempted to comment on that issue, but have refrained so as not to be thought elitist. But to be honest, when I read a post that contains misspellings and poor grammar, I get distracted from the thoughts of the person posting. There are many freeware spell-checkers available (you can even compose your post in Word or Open Office and use the native spell-checker to correct mistakes, then copy/paste it into the reply box) and the forum provides the means to edit the post after publishing it. There really is no excuse for many of the mistakes I've seen. In a text-based environment, what and how you type is as important as what you say in a verbal environment. Thanks for bringing this up and saving me being accused of being the only person here who notices such things. |

| I use Spellbound, an extension in Firefox. It does not always catch everything though. |

What constitutes poor grammar. People from different states and different country's talk different.
Younger people with college educations talk better than a older person with only a high school education. The older generation here in this forum did not have as much of a opportunity for education then as there is now.
People my age didn't get much of a chance for college. We got our draft notice while still in high school.
So i guess then to your thinking were just a bunch of Dumb a$$es.
Well my universal language reply to all you uppity educated people is " $#%$#$% " |

College? Everything I know about the English language I learned by the 10th grade. As a senior I was already publishing my own (quite unofficial) campus newspaper. |

I'm not trying to be elitist Cl, our differences should be treasured,
they are what make us all unique.
However, if English was not your native tongue the gaffes to which I refer could
make the post appear to be gibberish. |

I only just noticed.
This post has been edited.
this is not what I originally said.
Must we read every post in a thread now, to be sure that it still says
what we meant? |

YOur original post did not make sense in light of what I read, but I just figured that I did not understand the Queen's English.
As for the Death of English, you guys started it by populating half the world. And not maintaining linguistic purity while doing so. |

Hello,
One of the things I think it is important to keep in mind is that languages evolve. I have heard it said the English language evolved from Norman warriors trying to get dates with Saxon barmaids (or perhaps vice-versa).
In this forum, we are fortunate enough to have people who are very youthful as well as those who are very mature, some of whom are native English speakers and others for whom it is a second or third (or more-removed) language. I would never dream of disparaging someone who came here for help and made a few grammar, punctuation or spelling errors, or even just transposed a character here or there. Chances are, they are much more fluent in their native language than I am, and the fact they made an effort to come to a primarily-English using forum to ask for assistance already shows a certain amount of effort on their part.
If I cannot understand what someone is trying to say, I may try to guess what they are asking and provide an answer based on that, or ask them to clarify the problem.
After all, with the exception of Mr. Pirillo we are all volunteers here who come by choice rather than because it is part of our jobs. If one gets to the point where one feels irked by the language others use in the forum, it is probably an indication one needs to take a few days away from the computer.
Regards,
Aryeh Goretsky

I notice in SpellBound that five different English Dictionarys can be downloaded.
Perhaps there are that many or more varietys of English grammar? |

Cl,
You've plainly mis-understood what my object in posting this topic was.
I'm not criticising people for not being fluent in English,
but those who confuse others WHO ARE NOT FLUENT IN ENGLISH.
People come here for help.
If we cannot speak plainly, simply, and concisely then we're wasting both
their time and ours. |

I find that interesting since 1. Thats not what I thought this thread was actually stating in it's infancy, and 2. You had apologized to me stating you had posted this in a drunken state. :whistling:
I guess I missed something in the translation and correction of posts.....sorry |

This was my original intention Debora.
My drunken state was surely to blame for offending you personaly.
This was never my intention.
I did apologise.
I would never have attacked another here while sober.
However, I wonder, am I the only one here who likes a drink? |
