Long ago when everything was FAT - I had a utility that would look in the "empty" space on your drive and attempt to recover files that you had incorrectly deleted, or even after you'd reformated the drive. I haven't looked for or needed a utility like this for a while. I'm looking for something that will work on NTFS or even NTFS5 disks. Free is good, but if a recomendation comes in for a "pay for" program that will be good too. I'll do a Google look if no one has any recomendations. Thanks in advance for any recomendations.

Hello,

The following is a list of data recovery programs I found for use on FAT- and NTFS-formatted hard disk drives. It is incomplete and I have only used a handful of them, but perhaps one will meet your needs:

I have personally had good experiences using the data recovery programs from DataRecovery.Com, NalTech and Runtime Software.

Thank you for the quick response - I will work my way down the list and report back so that we add this information to everyone’s “how to” list.

At the risk of repeating myself (for the 1000th time), Wink
if you'll just back up your stuff, on a regular basis you never need worry about loosing anything. (NO recovery programs required) Rolling Eyes

I still have copies of files I deleted ten years ago, on old backup CD's.

Backup programs are a dime a dozen and available from many sources for FREE.
My favorite, of course, is Ghost, but Acronis True Image works too.

Good luck on that recovery.

Happy Holidays Everyone!

PS: The Pro's, including my own Software Guru, use a program called
"Tiramisu". I found several sites for it from a Google search for "Tiramisu data recovery"
Here's one site.

Hello,

It appears Tiramisu Data Recovery is now Ontrack Easy Recovery Lite. Tiramisu seems to predate Windows 2000, so it might be better to use the newer version, unless you are trying to recover data from a computer of that vintage.

I purchased a pay ware data recovery application call Flash File recovery. It is a very good program and when I had lost files, I could recover them no problem. And it have a good tool for formatting the hard drive or USB drive.
