I'm running Nero 6 ultimate, but just in case, I uninstalled it, but that didn't change anything.

Well, through serendipity, the answer was made known. It turns out the problem was due to the Windows XP SP3 upgrade. When I had to do a clean install on a new computer, I found that there was no problem at sp1, but when I installed sp3, it was there. SP3 is now history, and I'm using SP2.

I would love to know what it was in SP3 that caused the problem.

Here's something you may want to look at:

Although your symptoms are different I had a problem with my CD/DVD burner and this solution solved it. In my situation I could not burn discs.

Hello,

Thank you for coming back with an update. I can't help but wonder if the Nero software installation might have been corrupted or incompatible with XP SP3.

Regards,

I had totally uninstalled Nero as one of the first measures and it had no effect, so it doesn't look like this had anything to do with it.

One reason that companies like Ahead Software (Nero) post updates to their software is because of OS changes and the like. (service packs included)

For many years since I first bought Nero from Ahead Software, I've tried to keep the program up to date, just like I do for Windows, etc.
I've gotten most updates from Nero, for FREE.

One thing that I see all the time is when someone will buy a new CD or DVD drive and get Nero with it for FREE, then sometime later they change the drive to a different brand and now they find that their old Nero software doesn't work any more.

Only the full retail version of Nero will work with drives from different manufacturers.
The FREE version will only work with the drive it came bundled with.

I'm currently running Nero 8 Micro, which also works with Vista and Windows 7.

Good Luck,
Doc Cool
