I know.....I know, I've always said that APC was the only brand of UPS that I'd buy.

Quote:
A UPS is a device that goes between your PC and the wall socket, with a Gel-Cell battery inside. It will supply full AC power to your PC during short power failures that could cause your PC to crash, thus resulting in loss of data.

Well, that was then and this is now.

I've purchased my third "Cyber Power" UPS now and I have to admit I like them.
Initially price was what got me interested in them.
I just bought my third "Cyber Power" UPS, a 485 VA / 250watt unit for just $39.

I almost broke my arm getting that last one off the shelf at "Staples" office supply store. Initially they sold for almost twice that amount. God, I do love a bargain.

Each unit comes with the power monitor program that runs in the PC and a USB cable to connect the UPS to the PC. The monitor program will shut down the computer saving all open files, if there is an extended power failure.
The little green P in the system tray opens up to this screen:

I open this little window often, to check my incoming house power.

A one thousand $ computer can be protected from destruction with a UPS that only cost $39. Now, that's a bargain.

This last UPS that I just bought is my fifth one, now connected and running in my home. Living here in the lightning capital of the Americas, having a UPS or even several of them is only good sense.

Re-reading my post, it occurred to me that possibly some readers have never seen a UPS (Un-interruptable Power Supply).

So I looked on the internet and found a picture as close as possible to the little UPS that I just purchased. Here's what I bought.

One row of outlets on the top, are the Battery Backed UP outlets. The outlets on the other side are the Surge Suppressed Outlets. Those outlets would be for things like a printer, or speakers that do not need to be on Battery backup.

On one end of the box is a connector for one phone or DSL line, to protect that line from power surges from lightning strikes.
More computers are damaged by surges on the phone line than surges on the power line.

On the power cord end, is the USB/Serial connector where you can connect the UPS to your computer for the power monitoring software to monitor battery charge and line voltage.

So if you've never before seen a UPS, well there it is. Wink

Cheers Mates!

Yes, I use a couple of UPS's. All APC! I do have a couple of "Cyber Power" UPS's (bought a year apart - different models) - in the parts bin! They both died about a week after they went out of warranty! They both look nice, and the batteries are good, but the circuit boards go bad! At least the APC's last long enough to replace the batteries (from the dead Cyber Power units!).

Hello,

How is the first unit you purchased holding up? Are replacement batteries inexpensive and easy to install?

Regards,
