A few weeks ago I had to do a minor overhaul due to a poor attention span that had allowed my AV to expire. I am currently running the Win Live One Care trial. I'm unsure where the problem occured exactly but after removing the POS Norton and disabling Win Defender then installing 1 Care, I have limited access to my Control panel. Double-clicking the desktop icon gives me the allow box but after I click it I get a black/blank screen for a few seconds then the desktop appears with no other noticeable changes. I have to use the folder explore to access it. I have to click on the expand arrow to view it and still can only access bits and pieces of it. Even in the explore view I can tell that a fair portion of my icons are missing. I can see about 20+/- where I used to have 30 or so.

I'm working with an Everex IMPACT Series Desktop and Vista Basic. This hasn't had any major effects to date but it would be nice to know if it is caused by the 1 Care or if I need to dig deeper for the root of the problem. I wouldn't even begin to think myself proficient in systems or programming but I have had quite a bit more experience than most amateurs at solving my own problems.

I'm hoping that when I Uninstall the 1 Care things will return but that is still a few months in the future. Any ideas or personal experiences would be appreciated.

It seems that I read somewhere that you have to be careful with ANY "security" program that has WIN in its name as there are a LOT of trojans out there using that "disguise"

Also, IMO, do you really want to trust the one CAUSING this whole virus thing in the first place to PROTECT you from it? - Kind of like having the fox guard the henhouse, isn't it?

Though I didn't physically look at the address when I got it, I did have to log in with my Live ID. I have seen many comments akin to your own about MS products of late, and really can't disagree with you. Seems like they made a profit over product decision with the last few OSs they've released.

I did get the AVG downloaded also just in case. It's just waiting in the E drive for the Uninstall to happen. From the look of 1 Care, the options menu, there are a few things that need help for sure. The tune-up utility is given too much free reign and no real way of knowing what it has or is doing to your system. I cancel it when it tries to start. The virus definitions are somewhat out of whack also. I have a few Torrents that it repeatedly calls infected and the Ignore function is stubborn as a mule.

If I run a full sweep it doesn't bother them but in file explore mode it goes off repeatedly when I look at that folder.

Forget the MS-BS! OK?

Save the space by getting it off of your PC, ASAP.

And, FYI, AVG 8.0 FREE and Spybot Search & Destroy (also FREE) will keep your PC AOK and it won't cost you a red cent.

I giggle and shiver and then wretch when I hear someone say that their subscription to some half baked AV program has run out. Both Norton and McAfee are the pits!!!!! I'd rather have a virus! Rolling Eyes Wink Laughing Laughing

How many thousands of times, right here in this very forum have we told people to get AVG 8.0 FREE and stop worrying about viruses?
And this isn't the only forum where that same information abounds.

Many downloaders, like Limewire, are well known to contain spyware.
If your security software tells you that your downloader is infected, then believe it and get a different one.

If you have any doubts about any program, then GOOGLE it and see what people around the world are saying about it.

I download and test a lot of software. If I download something that's infected, AVG nails it right away.
Life is so much sweeter, when you know you're safe from Malware. Wink

Y'all have a great 2009 now, Y'hear?

The Doctor Cool

PS: Programs like and including Spybot Search & Destroy do not have an automatic update and scan function.
For Spybot, updates are posted on their server sometime on Wednesday.
So I encourage every Spybot user to get the latest updates and then run a full scan every Wednesday, Thursday or Friday of every week.

Hello,

Perhaps your computer has been infected with malware that slipped past your current security software.

You could try downloading a copy of HijackThis, creating a log file and posting it in the HijackThis Logs section for analysis by one of the experts there.
