Just went on vacation for a week and left my computer unplugged. When I returned, I went to start it up. It begain for a second and then went dead. When I went to restart it, nothing. If I turn off the power supply, and completely unplug it. I can get it to start for a second again before it dies.

First thing i did was get a new power supply. The same thing happened. Then I tried a new case. I was able to get it to start for a minute then it died the same way. So I figured it was the mother board and got a new one and installed it in the original case. It booted for a minute and then died. Same thing again- if i unplug power supply and wait, i can get it to turn on for a second before it dies. I have two sticks of ram and i tried booting it with each one individually and it doesnt help. also without graohics card or sound card..

I'm lost. Can anyone tell me what might likely cause of this?

Pent 4 - 3.4 cpu
2 sticks DDR2 Ram (1gig each)
ATI 4850 Graphx card

Hello,

Do you have a different CPU you can use for testing? Also, does the fan on the CPU's heat sink spin up briefly when power is applied to the system?

Everything starts up briefly for a second then stops. And the light on the mother board is on.

I don't have another cpu. Would a dead cpu cause the whole sytem to stop after a second?

Are there any beeps from the on-board speaker? Have you tried it "bare", just computer (no drives or keyboard/mouse), and monitor? You would get errors, but you could see if the mo-bo worked, and go from there.

I've tried it with no video/sound cards, no hard drives, etc- bare bones with and without ram. also tried it with a new cpu

i guess that leads me to cpu, but i didnt think that would cause a problem like this. unless the original problem was a bad psu, and the one i bought happened to be bad as well

Just wondering while you were gone did you have any severe weather at your house? This is probably first thing you did but did you try another wall outlet or test
the current where you plug your pc at.

Hello,

Did you use different RAM or the same RAM during your testing?

I've been able to power up a second computer at the same source. And i've tried this computer at two plugs.

As for the ram, i have two 1 Gig units. I've tried powering it up with each one separately, and with both installed

Hello,

It is possible both memory modules are damaged.
