Hello,

Yes, it is pronounced "MACK-uh-fee" with the emphasis on the first syllable.

Thanx goretsky Smile .. I called them many years back when I was using there software, for a short time (I was aghast that they wanted to charge me to update), and the girl who assisted me pronounced it that way. She didn't seem to appreciate my response to her pronunciation, but I had just assumed up til then that it was pronounced Mc CAF' ee (accent on the middle syllable). Oh well, what do I know.. jereece, Your write up is fairly comprehensive.

Lately I have been using f-prot (freeware) to scan and detect many virus and trojan threats for friends/family. Its particularly good on older systems with slower cpus', 256mb or less ram.

again, kudos on being detailed in your list.

I looked at f-prot but did not see a freeware version. Can you point me to that. I would be interested in giving it a try.

Thanks,
Jim

Duh.......regardless of how you spell it....I pronounce it "GONE".

Years ago they were the only act in town, so to speak.
Now, they have become bloatware just like Norton.

Whenever I set up a new computer or tune up an older one, Mc Afee and Norton are the first crapware to get removed. Then the spyware and trials, samples and demo's.

I'll repeat this till the day they close the big lid on me and shovel dirt in the hole. "The best security software in the world, for the home PC user is still 100% FREE".

I began developing my own computer Tune-Up procedure ten years ago.
Now that's about all I do since I stopped building new systems last year.

In a year of tune-ups, (that would be hundreds) I probably reformat one or two PC's. I take great pride in being able to clean up a totally corrupt PC without just taking the chicken way out and reformatting it.
I leave that crap to the Geek Squad. They are masters of the "RE-Format".

Jereece, we've talked before. I agree with the premise of your post if not the details of it. We'll talk again soon. But you are on the right track.

Keep up the good work and stay open to change.

Blessings,
The Shadow Cool

Hi there,
I believe you have helped me in the past, I love you guys.
I want to know where I can get one of those PC bibles, do you have one for sale or how can I get a copy of it? I pretty well know how to clean up my computer but I'd love some tips on how to fix stuff when I need to.
Thanks in advance.

Great layout.... and thx for your sharing.

Almost hate to say anything Very Happy
But I've found out that there is about 60% of the customers out there have some computer skills and might plunge into this procedure if they had just a little more information as to how to get to some areas.

Ex: set hard drives to always on, Turn System Restore off, Go into MSCONFIG / Startup Settings and uncheck programs, Compress the registry using NTREGOPT, Turn off “Allow Indexing Service to index this disk for fast file search” in the properties section of C:

and ETC.

See what I'm talking about?? If there was a little more "How-To" info. this would complete the (already excellent) procedure. Wink

Thanks for the feedback and you are correct. I originally wrote this for myself. When I made the original post, I had people like Rons, Shadow and Goretsky in mind as the one's who may be interested. As time permits, I wll look at adding more info as you suggest.

Thanks again.

I'd say it depended on just who your high school English teacher was.... Rolling Eyes

Since I first heard about them, way back in the last century, it's been called
Mc Aff-eee. Well that happens to be the way it's spelled too.

You are very gracious Rons.. Cool

And Shadow those were my thoughts exactly,, and my "learnin". Maybe it is a colloquial pronunciation or something. i.e. here in North Carolina we pronounce "Kerr" as "Car" though it looks like it would be pronounced "Cur". Rolling Eyes

As for the pronoun-C-ation of McAfee,,,,,

I was just being difficult. Having some fun. NO harm meant at all. Wink

Back on topic:

If you're installing a half dozen security programs for a customer you don't want to be installing them at $29 to $69 a whack.

FREE software is the only way you're going to get that customer clean and protected, without adding anything to the cost of your service.

If you want to waste your money on your own PC that's fine. I see no problem in that. Just don't force it on unsuspecting customers.
That's the kind of service you'd expect from the Geek Squad.

For some of the best software, there is NO retail version anyway.
Of course, you can always send the author some money if you'd like.

Good Luck,
Shadow Cool
