Let's start a thread of companies that use spam to advertise, and boycott those companies!
Here's my first addition:
Spam Remedy
http://vano-soft.biz/remedy/index.html?cow
I just had to get this out there. I am so sick of all this Junk Mail. I started unsubscribing to all the mail that I could, so as to elleviate the problem. As I was happily unsubscribing I came accross an e-mail for
 Spam Remedy
I was enraged that they would dare send SPAM to advertise their Anti-Spam Software. Not only was this e-mail sent to an address that was fished off my website, but it had no unsubscribe process.
My first thought was to modify the blaster worm to attack their website in perpetuaty. I cooled down and decided jail time wasn't worth it.
I don't mind getting advertising from companies that give me a free service, I actually expect that my name will be sold in those cases. As for the rest, I wouldn't mind ..... nope that could get me in trouble too. hmmmm. |

Unsubscribing to spam is usually a bad idea if you haven't subscribed in the first place. What you are doing by unsubscribing is telling the spammer that you are a live one and they may even put your email address on a hot list that will get you even more spam.

| Why just this morning I was offered 36" more penis! (4" times 9 offers) (all of it unsolicited). I highly recomend the mailwasher and spam cop combo. It automatically blacklists 99.9% of the spam they send me. |

I very much appreciate everyones posts and their advice.
My point was not so much about the spam but about the companies that allow it to continue. That is why I started this thread in the first place (besides wanting to vent a bit).
I think we should compile a list of companies that use Spam to advertise, then turn it over to ????, well OK I don't know who to turn it over to yet, but I bet we can find some organization to punish the offenders.
Maybe that group of haxorz in hong kong, hmmmm.
Just kidding that wouldn't be exactly moral or legal. Neither should spam be though. |

The proper term would be "crackers".
I would add somthing to the list, but I don't seem to get any spam (no idea why). |

Someone recently asked me how your address gets to the people who spam.....I could only come up with a couple answers.
1 - when you forward an email you send the address of the person who sent it to you, if you keep forwarding it (or if others keep forwarding it) spammers will get it and have a hay day with all those addresses.
2 - spammers sit and make up addresses and just start sending email.
3 - your address is sold by a site or someone who has it.
4 - UNSUBSCRIBING to junk mail. (that's a DUH one )
5 - your address is given to spammers.
I started using Mail Washer and what little i did get has stopped.
I know there are some other utilities out there, but this one seems to work fine for me. Besides, it's free or you can buy it. |

Frankly, I had rather boycott the French companies that do business in the USA than boycott Spam. I hate Spam, but I can deal with it...

That's very true, but why would you want a country filled with a bunch of french people.
On a more Serious note. I know unsubscribing to junkmail can be a way to get more, but that is part of the reason I started this thread. I want to see how much of the junk mail I'm getting is really Spam.
Truth be told I am getting less junk mail now, and i haven't seen very many posts here of companies that are spamming. what that tells me is that either nobody cares, so we will never get past this problem, or people are too lazy to do anything about it, which is effectively not caring or there really isn't that much "SPAM" going around, which I know isn't true.
I believe in our free market system, which means that although it's annoying that someone will fish your e-mail address from BBS, newsgroups and website, if they want to go through the effort then so be it. It really is no different than getting junkmail the snail mail way. The difference with E-Mail is the volume, and the volume is there because sending the mail is essentially free.
I am not advocating charging for E-MAils - I think that is a bad idea, we don't want the government any more active on the internet than they already are, and if E-Mail was to be charged for it would be the government determining the rates.
Mail washer is great and I use it, but think of the costs involved, not only in my time building my friends and blacklist, but also in terms of the cost to the internet. Each one of the mails I recieve must travel through a minimum of what 5 servers, at say 30K per average advertisment mail. Multiply that by the 100+ peices of Spam a day, then if I used the bounce capabilities the 100+ 1k peices being sent back. Now multiply that by the 100 million people on the internet and that is a LOT of wasted bandwidth. It's getting worse and something is going to break......Eventually.
How to make everyone happy?
Good question, truth is I don't think we can make everyone happy on this issue, but if we required ALL E-Mail to follow certain standards for dealing with subscriptions that would not preclude fishing for e-mail addresses and buying lists, but would force them to honor a national unsubcribe list that was held by a non-profit or the government and to not sell the addresses of those that unsubcribed.... You get the idea.
The biggest problem I see here is getting it started, and enforcing it. The enforcement would have to include stiff penalties and maybe even jail time for those that broke the regulations, and would need to involve the government. The other issue is foreign servers sending spam, open relays - how do you deal with all this. International treaties, blocking the servers of countries that do not comply, or blocking at our borders IP's of servers that do not comply.
This is all big medicine and we might kill the patient trying to cure it.
No matter how this all shakes out, IMHO we need to change the internet's underlying technologies so that mail must resolve back to the address that sent it, or it is not passed to the next server. I don't think anything can be done about SPAM until this is accomplished. |

| We can't even keep out illegal immigrants, how in the heck can this govt. Police our IP borders? Now I hear talk of having to get a license to use the INTERNET. But I will have to say that I agree with you 100%. |

This kind of A$$ Backwards thinking is precisely why we need to keep the government out as much as possible. It is just a thinly veiled tax that will limit access by the average citizen by discouraging them, and any of these Spammers would be happy to buy their license.
I really hope you mis-heard or mis-understood this. If you did hear correctly then all I can do is hope they receive an immediate cranialectomy for their cranial rectum inversion |
