Has anyone tried Google's new browser it's named "Chrome"?
It looks interesting and seems to be quite fast I use Opera 9.62 as my default so I'm used to speed and if you haven't tried opera for a while I think you might be surprised also.
You can get Chrome here Cool

I haven't tried it yet myself as they don't have a Linux release yet, but I might put it on a Windows machine later today. It sounds interesting...

Yes, using it now.
It picked up all my passwords and bookmarks fine.
Has an auto spell checker.
Uses many of the Firefox mouse usage, like middle click to close tab, but the scroll on the mouse works back to front, like Ff2, but thats OK.

I am on dialup, but it seems at least as fast as Firefox, if not faster.

I tried it at work today on a Vista machine and was impressed. Very fast, and more lightweight than Firefox. I opened my work Gmail account and our Intranet on both and found Chrome was using 1/2 the amount of memory. I might switch when the plugins start coming out.

Edit: An update to this early post. I didn't realize how Chrome dealt with tabs/processes so I thought it was consuming less memory initially. Turns out it was about equal when I added up each process, but Chrome was noticeably more responsive with Gmail.

Before you get too impressed:
1) exploit #1 http://www.securiteam.com/windowsntfocus/5YP060UPFU.html
2) exploit #2, not as serious
http://www.securiteam.com/securitynews/5TP010UPFU.html
3) I saw that it is using an unpatched version of something that Safari has already patched so it is susceptible to a carpet-bombing flaw
http://blogs.zdnet.com/security/?p=1843
4) passwords are stored in plain text without a master password
5) it has a setting whereby it updates itself and you can not turn off this "feature"

I downloaded Chrome....

I installed Chrome....

I ran Chrome....

I was unimpressed with Chrome and found it way too different than either IE or FF and it took me out of my own comfort zone.

I deleted it!

Nuff said! Rolling Eyes

Gmail?????

Why would you get gmail from a browser?

That's what email programs are for,
and Outlook Express does a fine job of pulling in your email, even GMail.

I use O.E. exclusively and have O.E. set to check all my email accounts every three minutes all day long.
It's a lot faster than PM's, and, requires NO clicking and waiting or any of that other BS. It even loads automatically when I first boot up my PC in the mornings.

In keeping with what I've said a thousand times or more already,
"I like Simple". Or in other words, K.I.S.S. !

This is true, but it doesn't work very well if you're accessing email on many different computers in different locations. For that reason, I use web-based email primarily too (Gmail and Gmail Hosted).

IMAP is an alternative solution, but last I checked Google's implementation of it was lacking some key features for me to start using it regularly.

Of course......but we're not all Globe runners! Rolling Eyes Wink Laughing Laughing

Some of us stay home (most of the time) and use one main computer.

I encourage people moving from one ISP to another to just set up a GMail account and then never worry about what ISP they're using.
And if they travel, they can easily access their email anywhere.

Since GMail went pop, it sets up easily in O.E.6 and of course is still FREE.
It don't get much better'n that.

Also, if you set www.google.com as your browser home page, you can customize the page to your own liking and have your GMail account displayed there too. So, getting to your email is pretty easy, if you want to do webmail, instead of using an EMail Client like O.E.6.

Different strokes for different folks!
Ya jus gotta luv it!

Yes Doc Very Happy

It is also easy to set up in Thunderbird.

Gmail accounts free us from the ISP trap that we can get into with email.

Now we can blow off a poorly serviced ISP's without worrying about losing emails.

Ken,
I know you're in KIWI land and I have no clue what kind of phone systems you have down there.

Here, we have a real mish-mash of phone companies.... some not so good and others just plain horrible.

A good friend just went from an AOL dial up account to an ATT/BellSouth DSL account. I spent over an hour on the phone with both BellSouth and ATT tech's trying to get the email set up to work. NO JOY!
Nothing that either of the tech's told me worked.

With my friends permission I aborted that whole process and set him up a GMail account and programmed it into Outlook Express.
It worked flawlessly!!! (Of course!)

Now, all he has to do is click one little desktop icon and within a few seconds his email is proudly displayed on his screen.
It just don't get no simpler than that.

After having AOL for many years, he's amazed at how simple life is now.

I also schooled him on how to access his email while 'UP North' visiting family and friends. (GMail, via web-mail)

Anyway............Y'all have a great day now, Y'hear?

Portable Thunderbird, installed on a thumb drive, solves my problem of having to access multiple accounts from different computers. I can keep everything together and keep all my settings, no matter where I am.

As for Chrome, it is more responsive. When a tab locks up waiting for something, it doesn't take the entire browser with it. Other than that, I wasn't impressed.

Yes Chrome is a browser that is still under construction.

At sometime in the future it may be good browser, maybe..

I'm really hoping that Firefox pays attention and makes their tabs behave similarly.
