More than 1.3 million people were evacuated from their homes yesterday as China's strongest typhoon in 50 years struck its south-eastern coast.
A state of emergency was declared as storm surges battered houses and flooded streets when the 130 mph Typhoon Saomai made landfall in Zhejiang province.
Saomai approached the coast as a maximum category-five "super" typhoon
These "super" typhoons [hurricanes] are more frequent in these days of global warming.
