I just reinstalled Windows, and now I am stuck with an Administrator account (with admin type obviously), and a second account with admin rights. I can't change the type of the second account to anything else because windows says I must have at least one account with admin rights. I am trying to change and/or delete the second account while logged in as the Administrator account. Any ideas?

WindowsXP has two Administrator account.
By default there is an Administrator which in theory you can only login in safemode. Also the default setting for password for this account is none. So advise is bootup in safemode and add a password.

In the normal mode there is what we call computer administrator. It needs one account of this type.

If you have winXP pro installed bring up the run window and type
"control userpasswords2" without the quotes and see if you can change the user settings.

Note if you have winXP home edition then you are out of luck.

What is the admin account that you log into in safe mode? Is that the account called Administrator? I'm logged into that account right now setting up applications. If you mean a different account, then I have 3(!) admin account on this machine when I only want 1.

Windows sets an account named "Administrator" when the system is first setup - it is required by MS on the operating system.

Now, there's another caveat that you must have at least one other account with administrator privileges (I believe that the 2 have slightly different permissions, but that's just a guess on my part).

So, you're stuck with those 2 accounts (plus several others that Windows or your OEM may setup for you).

I haven't tried this, but you might create another account with limited permissions and then log into the Administrator account and try to delete the other account with administrator privileges. It probably won't work, but it's worth a shot if that's what you want.

GDay All,

Right click My Computer and select manage, Under 'Local Users and Groups' select users.

Right Click the accounts you dont want and choose Delete.

If that doesn't work then:

Right click on the accounts you don't want and choose properties.

Tick the checkbox 'Account is Disabled'

This will effectively remove those accounts from the system.

Note: DO NOT disable the account named Administrator and make sure at least one other account with administrative permissions is enabled (usually your preffered Logon Name). Also, you may disable the guest account but DO NOT delete it.

You should also see the 'Helpassistant' account. By default it should be disabled, unless you have remote desktop enabled.

You will also see IUSR_******* and IWAM_******* accounts IF you have IIS installed.

The last account should be SUPPORT_******* and by default it should be disabled.

There may be other accounts present if you have Visual Basic or Visual Studio installed.
