Cell Phone Spying

Well.......here in the UK, we call `em mobile phones, but that`s an aside. Not sure if this post belongs here or elsewhere. Doubtless I will be told in due course! Just come across this site, courtesy of The Internet Patrol newsletter:

NOW, this all seems very shady to me. Nor sure about the legality here in the UK. What`s the position in the States, where it obviously originates from? What`s other Gnomies` opinion of this sort of stuff?

I wasn't able to view the link but cell phone "spying" does exist. Think about it (in the US) if the government tag certain words (like president, shoot, kill) to make sure there any threats against this country or its leaders and your conversation can be played back in a courtroom; it has to be listened in on and recorded. I'm sure the run of the mill conversations aren't kept.
I can see other non-third world countries doing this as well.
