Old thread, new post!
Well, this thread certainly helped me in solving this problem.
In my case it was RecordNow! that was causing all of my problem. I started by removing every programs I add installed like Alcohol 120, CloneDVD and some others. But it's after I removed RecordNow! that the Refresh came back in Windows Explorer and all of the other programs that can seek the DVD. It even solved an old AutoPlay problem that I had.
Wow, what a nightmare! I even brought back a DVD writer (a BenQ) to the store and got a HP 640 and I still had the same symptoms. HP did not know what it was. One the the support guys told me that I needed a second CD/DVD player to install the software for the drive. What about that for support!
Anyways, everything came back to normal and i am now very happy, thanks to this thread and all of you guys!

Birth,
I'm pretty sure you're correct about the problem being caused by third party software.
After your post I had a look at my earlier one of a few posts back. I wrote about using the Explorer right click menu to open and close the tray which would allow it to refresh.
At the time, I thought that having a 'close' option on the right click menu was normal for XP, but have since discovered that it's not a standard menu item. I must have had the third party software that put it there installed for so long I didn't realise. Removing the software removed the 'close' item from the right click menu, but it also fixed the problem with Explorer not refreshing the drives by itself (I have 3 drives in my computer and they all suffered from the same problem).
Only thing I can't include in this update is the software that was causing the problem, as this thread's so old, and I fixed it so long ago, I can't actually remember who the culprit was. |

Hi!
I have a similar problem with XP SP2 with a slightly interesting twist. I have 2 drives - a Sony DRU-720A DVD/RW and a Hitatchi GD-7500 DVD/ROM. Both do this: You can put a DVD in one drive, say one that's actually a DVD with AUDIO and VIDEO TS folders. Then, you can take that disc out and put in some other disc like a DVD full of JPGs or MP3s or whatever, go to explorer and you'll still see the AUDIO and VIDEO TS folders from the other disc THAT'S NO LONGER EVEN IN THE DRIVE!!!! You can actually still even go into the subfolders and see all the individual files within the folders, get properties on each file, etc. Only when you try to run one do you finally get an error. This happens on either drive, has only started recently within the last 2 months or so. There's been no new software that I've put on during that time save automatic windows updates, and the only thing that seems to fix it is to reboot everytime I put a new disc in either drive. No amount of clicking refresh, opening/closing the tray, closing the explorer window and re-opening it, going in through My Computer, etc none of that helps at all.
Anyone have any ideas on this new 'undocumented feature' of Windows?
Thanks,
Mike |

Hello,
Have you verified the disc drives are jumpered properly?

Hi!
I have the exact same problem as Mike (wolfy1969) is describing one or two posts above. BUT it's on my laptop and have (of course) only one CD/DVD-R drive. So I guess changing the jumper wouldn't do anything.
The autoplay doesn't work at all.
Would be great if any of you know the solutions, since it's really annoying to have to restart the computer every time I change CD disk.

AutoPlay - Checkpoints
Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Services/Shell Hardware Detection/Return this service to Automatic.
If you are using TweakUI/My Computer/AutoPlay
Go to Windows Explorer/Tools/Folder Options/File Types. Highlight AudioCD/Advanced. Make sure that Play is in bold type, then go to Edit and verify that this line is listed under Application used:

Yeps. That did it! 1000 thanks.
When I look at the registry settings after the fix I realize that I should have tried RandomBox's post (#14, I think) before whining. The HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\cdrom "Autorun" Value="1" would have done the trick as well (but my laptop was at home and I got so excited when someone was having the same trouble as me and it seemed like everyone in this forum were so expertish and I've been having this problem for quite a while and etc etc, so I just HAD to post a what it turned out to be unnecessary post)
Anyway 1000 thx Zlim and 1000 thx RandomBox and 1000 thx to all of you. My CDROM finally works!!!

Hi Mike and all,
I have the very same problem. Right now WIndows is telling me that I have in my DVD drive the disc of Sin City, while that was in 3 days ago and meanwhile I placed at least 4 or 5 different discs in it. Unfortunately for this "feature" of Windows I need to restart my computer. I tried the right click and eject and sometimes it works for the disc refresh but the name on Windows Explorer will still be the old one, while various software will read the name of the actual disc. Is it possible that no one noticed this at Microsoft? Then again, I'm sure they have bigger holes to fix... errr... I mean, better features to improve

1. Enable Auto Insert Notification for CD Drives
Some programs will disable this default setting to play inserted CDs automatically! Roxio applications do this; for example! To re-enable this functionality >>>
• Navigate to the following Registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\CDRom
• Double-click Autorun
• Make sure the value is set to "1" under Value Data.
• Navigate to the following registry key:
You should now be able to pop in a CD, and WinXP should pop up the autoplay menu and attempt to autorun the CD.

You are a life saver! The Microsoft KB article I found was of NO help at all! I had turned off auto-run in Windows and turning it back didn't work! Your registry hack did the trick.
Thanks!

| I had the same problem. My Pioneer DVD-RW wouldn't recognize anything until you double clicked on the drive. So irritating! Anyway, I took your advice and traced my problem to the Write DVD program that came BUNDLED with the drive!!! As soon as I uninstalled that little piece of hell, the drive works like a dream. Autoplay is back and working perfectly. Thanks all! |

I followed your instructions from post#14 in this thread and resolved my problem with Windows Explorer not refreshing my optical drives.
The problem arose after I had manually disabled Auto-Run on the individual drives. (to prevent hackers from executing malicious code)
It had nothing to do with any of my hardware, firmware versions, or third party software apps. It was directly related to doing the right thing the wrong way.
Microsoft documentation only added to my confusion...
Thank you for your simple, accurate, and effective solution to this problem. (I registered with this forum just to tell you this.)
This is a terrific resource for problem solving and I'm glad that I 'surfed' in. |

nice thread. lots of good answers. i actually had this problem before and it was autorun that fixed it. this time though, all i had to do was turn off CD Burning for the drive: right-click the CD Drive, click Properties, and click Burning. uncheck the box and you should be good to go.
good luck! |
