| Odd little problem. While waiting for SBC to activate my new DSL I thought I'd checkout the install CD. Either auto-start or by clicking the setup exc I get a popup saying Win 95 is not supported and the CD closes. I am running Win 2K. I use used hard drives on my machine and don't know their prior history but since I have had them they have been Fdisked multiple times and had Win 2K installed multiple times.
I did call SBC DSL but the tech was totally clueless. I don't even think she ever understood the problem. I don't want to install most of what is on the CD but there are somethings I want. Before I start try to find the things I want on the CD the hard way by trying to find and run the individual files does anyone have any suggestions for a way to get around the CD misidentification of my OS?

| If you have multiple drives, I would disconnect all but your master with Win2k, and see what happens. :hmm:

Thanks all for the replies. I never use ISP software anyway but initially I thought it might be handy to have some of the 2Wire Gateway software on the disk but I think I can manage without it.
For the record my Win 2K is not an upgrade. I have never run Win 95 but it's a used hard drive so I guess a Win 95 pointer could be buried that Fdisk and formatting missed but size marked on drive is very close to size show in Windows so I doubt it's a hidden partition. Aren't computers fun. |

Hello,
I found a page of downloadable device drivers and documentation here on 2Wire's web site. Perhaps these are the same files as those available on the disc?

There's always that old possibility that the software is NOT win2k compatible.
If it's seeing the OS as Windows 95, that's more than just a possibility.
Check the literature that came with the CD. It may even say right on the CD what OS's it works with.
It's NOT getting that win95 idea from the HD......NOT!
Just a thought,

Just a bit of update. The 2Wire Gateway (really a router/modem stripped to one ethernet connection) I have is selfcontained. It needs no drivers for Ethernet. It has PPoE and other firmware for connecting, diagnostics, firewall, etc. already installed on it.
Drivers posted here are for USB which isn't an option on my model (and should, according to all posts I read, be used only as a last resort anyway). (Thanks though for posting.) Based on many posts in SBC DSL forums the Yahoo CD just installs AOL like crap (though you do at least get to pick and choose ).
Bottom line you can do the whole setup with out any software. I had really no problem except with the crappy coding of Yahoo's registration page. Java errors on a form box prevented me from entering information needed to complete it using Mozilla (Seamonkey) or Opera. I went to IE and the form did work but the navigation buttons which did show in Moz' and Opera didn't show so I had to use the keboard to continue to the next page.
I actually am happy with my $14.95 DSL. They acctivaed four days early and it was already at about max speed so no ramp up. If you need help though rather then calling for help I'd suggest first checking the forum here http://www.dslreports.com/forum/ilec,am and links there to other forums and FAQs. Mods in the unoficial forums (open to all) are mostly SBC techs. In the official forum (restricted to subscribers) they are being paid by SBC. There are also modem specific forums and FAQs.
P.S. The CD is supposed to be Win2K compatable. |
