Vista worries cause businesses to consider Macs and Linux
Quote:
KACE, a systems management appliance company, announced on Nov. 19 that its new survey revealed that 90 percent of the Windows users are concerned about migrating to Vista, and that 44 percent would consider deploying Macs or Linux-based systems to avoid Vista migration.

While Microsoft claims that Vista deployments are increasing, analysts, such as Forrester, observe that business Vista adoption has been going extremely slowly and that Linux is becoming a serious contender for the enterprise desktop.

KACE, which focuses on system management rather than having its own dog in the desktop operating system wars, sells system administration appliances that run on FreeBSD. Its appliances can be used to mange both desktops and servers running Windows, Linux, Solaris and Mac OS.

In response to concerns about unwanted complexity to their heterogeneous IT environments, 44 percent of respondents reported they would consider deployment of alternative operating systems, such as Macintosh and Linux, to avoid migrating to Vista. A mere 13 percent see their company moving all its desktops to Vista. Of those who consider using alternative operating systems, 89 percent said it would be beneficial to use a single systems management interface to manage all types of operating systems in their environments. (continues)

It looks like Bill & Co. might have something to be concerned about.

So, what happened to a PC running XP-Pro?

It's still a viable option..... ya think?

Millions of PC's that delivered with Vista are now running quite happily on Windows XP.
An associate of mine regularly removes Vista and replaces it with XP for his customers.

XP will still be sold thru June of this year (2008)
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/lifecycle/default.mspx
and it will be available to system builders thru January 31, 2009.
MS support then continues for a few years, followed by extended support.

I'm running Windows 2000 and I'm still getting patches and hotfixes. I think that will run through 2010 so at that rate, extended support for XP might continue thru 2019.
So yes, XP is still a good choice and IMHO a much better choice, at the moment, than Vista.

Hello,

I work in the computer security industry, and one thing I have noticed is that many times will announce in a press release there is a threat, vulnerability, expoit or some other type of problem and that they happen to have a product or an update available which is the solution. With a little luck, a journalist may come along and write an article, which can further muddy the distinction between the press release and the news. It is often quite interesting to look at the article and then compare it against the original source material to see what inaccuracies or amplifications have occurred.

I suspect that Microsoft Windows XP is going to be around for a long time, just as Microsoft Windows 98 was (and still is, although to a lesser extent).

Regards,

XP/Pro is a viable option, and will be for some time. After all, software doesn't rust. Big businesses have nothing to worry about, since most of them license the OS under some type of blanket agreement or other.

For the near term, owners of new computers delivered with Vista can obtain a "downgrade" license key for XP. The only problem then is drivers.

For some of us, the OS is nothing but a vehicle that supports the applications that we run. For us, it's our ERP system, and AutoCad. That means we have to run Windows (please, don't start tell me about all the "wonderful" Linux alternatives. For our key apps, there are none.) We do use FireFox, ThunderBird, and OpenOffice.

The number of computers in our company is small enough that when I can no longer get XP based machines, having to do a transition by attrition to Vista isn't going to be a real big deal.

I'm using Vista at home on fairly new hardware, and to be honest, for most things it isn't that bad.
