Bump has started a discussion on a mailing list I'm on of San Diego bloggers as to what constitues a blog. Does "blog" have a generally accepted description? Is the concept still in the process of "finding itself"? Will we define blogs simply by continuing to blog?

I agree with the guy and the comments. Calling something a blog does not make it a blog. It's just the new thing, no different than when my old boss learned the term peer to peer network and then ran around telling people we ran one, when in fact we run a client server network. LOL

First of all, anything printed on paper doesn't count (WEB log), so that *gasp* Milwaukee neighborhood paper needs a new editor!!
The example he gave of that page on SI site... ha ha ha.... not a blog. That's an ARTICLE...written about some personal observations. Just because it's personal doesn't make it a blog....

So what does??

About the writer/writers
The ability to provide feedback (whether or not the author allows it is a different topic...but the otion has to be available).

Too funny, Meka. Reminds me of the year Sam Goody got on a "synergy" kick. I got so sick and tired of seeing that term used in every other sentence of nearly every statement issued by everyone in the company from the president down to our regional manager I took to requesting that the user look up the definition and tell me how we were combining seperate particles in the music retail business. Maybe that's partly why I'm not there anymore. Wink

But I digress. I would add that a blog should also discuss, as you say from a personal point of view, a wide range of topics. Perhaps we'll see this concept sub-divided in the future. (?)

A "personal" blog to me is nothing more than a collection of thoughts and other random observations on the world. It's also a diary of sorts. A group blog is another story...
