If you have a few spare hours you may want to drive to Iowa State University in Ames (about 40 mins north of DM) and see the replicated Atanasoff-Berry Computer, the first electronic digital computer ever made*.
It was built between 1939-1942 in the Physics building on the ISU campus by Prof. John Atanasoff and Clifford Berry.

*A court ruling validated that the ABC computer superseded the more well known ENIAC computer by several years, and that some of the ideas/design of the ABC were actually used to design the ENIAC.
